DNS Server Not Responding
Hello All, I am aware that this is a commonly posted problem, but I have visited several of the previous threads and sorted through them to no avail. I have changed my DNS settings to Google DNS. I do not have a Microsoft Mini Wifi port. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my device driver several times. I have flushed the DNS cache after changing the DNS settings, no dice. It is not my router, as I have several other devices that can connect to the internet immediately. However, moments after starting my computer, there is no internet access. This occur for 20 minutes or more. After running the troubleshooter a couple of times, the problem will right itself, yet there is no documentation on this problem and why it exists. Please help. Reinstalling windows should not have to be an option. This install is relatively fresh.

cann you install wireshark and check where the packets are getting dropped once the connections drop?Arnav Sharma | Facebook | Twitter Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I am installing Wireshark now. Edit What exactly am I looking for with Wireshark? I do understand a bit about how the internet works, but I don't know how what the colors in Wireshark mean, or how to identify packets that are getting turned away or whatever I should be looking for exactly.

I have seen this a few times and an SFC /scannow has fixed the issue. Other fixes have been to disable IPv6 and making sure the same problem happens in safe mode (eliminates a few other issues). How do you know it is definitely the DNS? You can get to google by going to 74.125.224.18? Can you ping your loopback address successfully? Also, do you have the same issue if you were to hardwire the computer into your router via an ethernet cable? What kind of computer is this? When you say this install is relatively fresh, does that mean you restored it from a Windows 7 CD or was it restored from a Dell/Asus/HP etc system restore?

"DNS Server Not Responding" is what I get when I run Windows Trouble Shooter. I have not tried pinging Google's IP directly, nor have I tried pinging myself. I will definitely try that the next time this error occurs. I do not have the ability to connect to ethernet because my router is too far away. I have a DELL XPS 210, running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I'm connected using an Asus PCE-N15 wireless pci adapter. I have disabled IPv6. I will report back if that fixes the issue. I'm assuming SFC /scannow is a command? When do I use that? Just once? Or whenever the problem occurs? Thank you for you help.

Hi, Regarding SFC, you can refer to the following article: Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833Alex Zhao TechNet Community Support

This will show you red color lines, when you have a packet drop or some restriction in transmission.Arnav Sharma | Facebook | Twitter Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Lots of blue, grey, green etc. Yet no traffic is going through. I have very few red or black with red text packets. TCIPv6 has been turned off. I'm seeing moderate improvement from that, but it may just be an illusion. The hicups don't seem to last as long as they did before I turned off TCIPv6. Thank you for your help so far.

The red part shows packet drops/blocks. Please check them, you might need to use Wireshark manual to get detailed info on this.Arnav Sharma | Facebook | Twitter Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I don't really understand what you're trying to get me to do about this. I can recognize that there are packets being dropped. I could have told you that by the fact that my internet was not functioning. What kind of insight into this problem should I be gleaning from these dropped packets?

I have turned off windows firewall, because windows told me a firewall might be blocking my web access. This also had no effect.
