DVD Backup fails a lot - is there best practise??
Hi All Correct me if I am wrong and if there is a better way of doing this: I often need to remove files from a directory because I am running out of disk space... so, I tend to put a blank DVD into my drive, kill the dialog box which pops up because I dont know what it does, I CTRL E to get an explorer session up, right click D and format, then when done click on the D drive I switch to another explorer session and navigate to my directory, grab as many files as I can and Ctrl X them, switch to the D Explorer session and CTRL V them in. When done I close the session and eject the DVD I have had the occasional hiccup where the move seems to be unable to work and returns a dos function error - the result has been to lose EVERYTHING I have moved. I have recently moved from RC of Ultimate to a full blown version and noticed a couple of worrying things: (a) the move now takes AGES.... 3.6G took over an hour yesterday morning.... compared with 15-20 minutes roughly for a whole dvd previously (b) I have had 3/4 failures described above losing everything.... Seems I'm doing something W7 does not like.... Suggestions would be welcome george

How big is the hard drive? They are not all that expensive any more so why not move to a larger drive. At the same time, pick up an external USB 2.0 hard drive and use it to backup to. The backup software that comes with Windows 7 is sufficient for simple backups. I use Acronis True Image because I like the interface better and it has additional features I like.Rich Why can't I be different and original like everybody else? - Vivian Stanshal

Hi there, It seems that you still use Manually Backup which would be time-consuming and inconvenient in most cases. As Ztruker mentioned, you should consider use Windows Backup & Restore or any other backup programs to run automatic backup at regular intervals. In my opinion, external HDD is the best choice for backup and Windows 7 Backup & Restore function is pretty good. You can consider use it as your main/only backup program. I’ve attached an official articles for your reference: Windows 7 Backup and Restore for your reference:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/backup-and-restore.aspx Where should I save my backup?http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Where-should-I-save-my-backup

Sorry guys, I didnt make myself clear. I do use external drives to perform routine backups. This isnt a system backup - its a data backup eg building movie catalogs so that later when I am away on business travelling I can take some of my favourite movies and watch them. thanks

You should use a better util for this, do you not have the burning software which came with the DVD burner? If not go get a freebie, you should burn what you want test the burn worked and then delete the files.

The DVD burner is the DVD drive in my laptop. I used to use Nero but the last version I had was incomptable with Vista - when Vista first launched. Any recommendation for W7?? thanks

Hi, If this is not a Windows Backup, I think it’s ok to use burning program to copy your movie/video files directly. Not sure which version Nero you are using, Nero 9 is Windows 7 compatible and it’s affirmed by both Nero and Microsoft.http://www.nero.com/ena/nero9-system-requirements.htmlhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=Nero&v=Nero&uid=9&pf=1&pi=4&s=nero&os=32-bit Meanwhile, if you want to try any other CD/DVD burning programs, you can consider use the following Windows 7 compatible free programs. Meanwhile, please notice that you can choice a faster burning speed as a test (e.g. 16X for DVD) since Windows build-in burning have no option that you can select the write speed.
