Defender and Automatic update question
Is there a way to tell windows update to never bother me again about the defender updates and just install them. Now you get almost every day this warning if you have automatic updates set to download but to let me decide when to install. But it would be better to be able to tell to some updates never to ask me and install them in the background. Same way as I want it with my virus scanner.

Backfire - Great idea... You might want to consider posting this feature request in the Have Comments about Windows 7 RC (Part 6) thread. That thread is monitored and ideas are collected regularly and forwarded to the development team. If it's a good enough idea, it may be included in a future version, or product update.

This is because they are critical updates. Windows Update will keep prompting to install it. If you do not want to install the updates, you may hide them and they would not be offered again. Please refer the following website. Using Windows UpdateArthur Xie - MSFT

Arthur - I think what the OP was suggesting - and I think it's a good idea really - is that there be perhaps two classes for critical updates. As a for instance, Defender (or MSE for that matter) definition updates NEVER require a reboot. They just slip them into whereever they live and that's the end of it. Then there are those updates - like today's critical updates for IE and Visual Stuido - that DO require a reboot. At any rate... There may be times when it's inconvenient to have your computer reboot itself - right in the middle of when you're doing something (like a presentation, or playing a game or whatever...) and you don't want to reboot right when Windows decidesit should. As we've seen with the RC, there can be times when the pop up doesn't quite make it to the top of the pile and sometimes Windows just reboots itself without warning.. That's why most people have Windows Update tuned to notify and NOT install automatically. I don't mind downloading critical stuff and installing it. I'd just like to make sure I'm not in the middle of something when I'm doing it. I believe what the OP and I are saying is there's no real reason to inform us that there's an update to Defender (or MSE) - just download and install that one automatically and be done with it - like most antivirus programs already do automatically.

Backfire, if it is your goal to havethe definition updatesthat windows defender uses to check for malware install automatically, you can go to the control panel, open windows defender and select tools and under tools select options. From here you can choose when defender scans and if you want it to check for and install definitions if there are any available before scanning. After this is configured defender will automatically install definitions without going through windows update before a shedualed scan.Select "check for updated definetions before scanning".
