Deferred Procedure Calls
Starting about 1 1/2 months ago I started hearing strange noises from my hard drive...and trouble with my mouse....especially when going into "Favorites" in IE8.But I also hear the noises...have slowness...even when disconnected from the Internet. My computer has a 2.8 GHz dual core processor and 2 GB of RAM....and XP Pro with all latest updates.I have downloaded Process Explorer...and have seen that when these things occur...I have a small CPU usage for "Deferred Procedure Calls". I have not been able to determine the cause of this...and am getting tired of it to be quite honest.I've also had instances where I walked away from my computer for a few minutes...only to come back and see some ".exe" going crazy in my Task Manager...like helpsvc.exe....or wmiprvse.exe...or spoolsv.exe.Last but not least...I did some search both on the 'Net and on my computer concerning Perflib...and all of a sudden...had similar named files show up in my Temp folder.Anyone else having problems?Any advice on figuring out what is happening?1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi,Do you remember making any changes on your computer?Try the below troubleshooting steps: Step 1: Check for the issue in ‘Safe Mode with Networking’. ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ starts Windows in safe mode and includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network.A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222Step 2:If the issue does not persist in ‘Safe Mode with Networking’, then put the computer in a clean boot state.a. Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.b. Refer the following Microsoft KB article for more information on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in XP:How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned under the section 'Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state' in the above KB article.Step 3:You may check for the faulty module that could be causing the issue. How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427Also refer to the below link:5 ways to speed up your PC:http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspxRegards,Manasa P – Microsoft Support.

Thanks for your reply Manasa. This happens whether I'm in regular Mode (my user account) or in ANY of the Safe Modes (Networking or not...Admin acct or mine)....even happens when I disconnect my DSL modem and use Programs like Paint etc...About 10 days ago I did a Defrag...as the main C drive was 27% fragmented...and that stopped the problem for a couple of hours...then it came back. I've checked this out again twice since then...and the program tells me no Defrag necessary.I also performed a chkdsk...and had nothing to repair.I tried using the OneCare online scanner 3 times...1st time it caught 9 "problems"...but froze at 34% of the scan being completed (Full Service scan).2nd time I used the Quick scan and found nothing.3rd time I tried using the Full Service scan again...it froze again at the 34% mark.I found one "Rogue Link" in My Favorites using Malware-Bytes...but nothing else using ERUNT, Spy-Bot and a couple of other things. The only major software I've downloaded has been Skype...but I haven't used it...and the problems were happening before then. It's especially bad when I 1st power up in the morning...or right after I sign out of email programs or certain forums that I belong to.I've also done a search for .log and .txt files hoping I could find out what is running...no luck there either.I have a recovery disc created by the person who sold me this computer using a product called "Image Burn". It save me once already...but I don't want to start from scratch again like I did last summer when I picked up a virus that did me in.My gut tells me that there is some kind of data collection going on..and it's MY personal belief that MOST of the companies doing this are bordering on privacy infringement.Your thoughts?
