Desktop.ini hinders backing up files
For backup of all my documents I copy each night the folder in which they are sitting on my C-disk (By the way, not in Documents and Settings) to my D-disk. After receiving the message that the folder is already present on the D-disk, and giving the go-ahead for overwriting all of it, the copying used to go through without any hesitation, until a weeks ago. Since then the copying stops once in a while and says that there is already a desktop.ini file on the D-disk and asks me if it is allowed to overwrite it. This is quite annoying, since I do the backup overnight, and since the problem started I see in the morning that the backup to my D-disk has stopped at this unnecessary question about overwriting desktop.ini. How can I resolve this problem? I have read that desktop.ini files have to do with assigment to various users of the PC. But I am the only user and administrator and I want to keep it that way. I am using WindowsXP Home edition.

Hi Laurens Wachters,- Are the other files and folders not getting copied successfully now?Windows has hidden files and folders that aren't meant to be accessible by users. The desktop.ini file contains information about how you've customized a folder. This hidden file is placed in every folder to tell the operating system how to display and customize the viewing of that specific folder. For example, this allows a folder to have a custom icon. You can check the settings as given here to hide the desktop.ini file:a. Click My Computer on the desktop.b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.c. Click the View tab, and then select “Do not show hidden files and folders” and “Hide protected Operating system files” check box.d. Click Apply. Click OK.Copy the files and folders now and check.Regards,Divya R – Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.
