GP edit just edits some registry settings.http://www.cesabarre.com/

I know that it updates the registry and sets the DisableSR=1 registry key. My question is technically - when we disable System Restore manually it deletes all exiting Restore points on system, wouldn't it be same when done through GP. A bug in design or something MS would look into. Regards, SBRegards, SB

I agree, some MSMVPs perhaps can explain this. i tested it in win 7 ult 32 and pro 32 Interestingly, that key doesnt even make any difference.http://www.cesabarre.com/

This behavior is by design. If you want to delete all restore points, you can use the command line: Vssadmin delete shadows Vssadmin Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks Arthur. We are already using this command line to delete the SR points. Wouldn't it be better for GP setting to behave same way as we follow manual steps to disable SR. Also, applying the GP settings - just greyed out options for SR, but System Protection remains Turned on the drives. We were looking for a solution, where when we centrally deploy the setting to Disable the SR through GP, it disables SR, deletes all SR point and also turns System Protection off on all drives. This is because the policy only disable the entry of System Restore, but does not turn off the function in your system. This behavior is by design. I will forward your feedback to proper department. They will pay attention on this. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
