Highly defragmented drive suggests that your hard drive is about 40GB with two partitions of 30 and 10GB. Where did this idea come from? I see absolutely nothing in the original post to suggest this conclusion. To jtim.mcgarvey:If by "disk usage before and after remain the same graphic" you mean that the pie chart showing the amount of used space and free space (which you see when you right click the disk icon and choose Properties), you should know that defragmenting only rearranges the way files are stored on the disk -- it does not create any more free space. For more information, see this explanation of what defragmentation means. Note the bullet points at the very bottom of the article that explain what files are NOT defragmented (which might account for the presence of defragmented files after you run Disk Defragmenter). As noted in the linked article, one type of file that won't be defragemented is a file that is in use by another application. So if by asking, "Is it possible another program is being possessive with the disk?" you mean is it possible that some files are not defragmented because another program is using them, the answer is yes. In general, you should shut down as many applications as possible before running Disk Defragmenter.

The built in XP defragmenter is not very attractive in it's display.Your "disk usage" may not show any addition free space if that is what you are looking for. Defragmenting does not usually equal additional free disk space. There are several free third party disk defragementers that are much more colorful and include additional features and functionality (scheduling, better reporting, etc.). Some people think the third party ones do a better job too. Installing a third party disk defragmenter may prevent your built in XP defragementer from working (you can fix it though).A Goole search with:disk defragmenterwill get you going. Please vote my posts as helpful so I can get lots of points. I am saving up for a pony!
