I am trying to run my disk defragmenter on Windows. I want to compress my files to increase my PC's performance. I am not very computer savvy! The error says... "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (C:). Please run Chkdsk/f." Can ANYONE get me step-by step to figure this out? I haven't been able to defrag in months!1 person got this answerI do too

Dear Saurabh,You ROCK! It worked! I am sure it was a simple thing for you, but I thought it was going to be super difficult! So, yes, it worked but I only have 3% free space (and it requires 15% to run properly). Guess I will have to get some more memory before I do it. But at least you were able to help me, THANK YOU!! By the way, do you know anything about what is "safe" to delete to free up some space? I have a lot of "Updates" and I am afraid to delete something useful. I have a ton of Microsoft.Net Framework and was wondering if it is safe to uninstall any of them to free up space? THANKS AGAIN!!!

Hi,Glad to hear it worked :) for creating free space try deleting the temp files: To clear temp files click start -> Run & Type -> %temp% -> click ok. Delete all the files within temp folder.Also to recover the space on the partrition, you will have to Run disk cleanup and compress old files. Also refer tohttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/956324.To start disk cleanup, open My computer -> Right click drive c: -> Click on Properties -> you get an tab for disk cleanup.If you dont plan to uninstall service packs you can try deleting the $NtUninstall in within windows folder.Note that the folder is marked as hidden, so to see it, you need to have Explorer configured to show hidden files/folders.Alternatively (for the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder): If you want to keep those files for later uninstall purpose you can make a backup of the folder to e.g. a CD and put it back at the time of uninstall.You can also try switching off System restore and disable hibernation (Hibernate mode writes an image of what you're currently working on to a special file on your hard drive, and then shuts your computer almost completely off). To disable Hibernation: Click Start -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> click Power Options.This can help recover some space on your system.

Thanks, this is a wee confusing, but I do know how to do the "disk cleanup." I tried the hibernate, and it brought my space from 3% down to 1% soooo, not sure about this part (?) The other stuff is way over my head abuth the $NtServicepack, etc. I don't know what that is! ha ha.. I will try the defragment now, and see what happens! Thanks again!:)

Hi,To run disk cleanup click on my computer, Right click on Local Drive C, select properties. You will get an option for disk cleanup, select that and once it completes tickmark on compress old files and click ok.To view $NTServicepack files you need to open my computer -> Local Drive c: -> Windows -> Select tools -> folder options -> view -> tickmark Show hidden files & remove tickmark from Hide Protected system file. Click ok.Now in windows folder you will get all $NTServicepack folders.
