Do we get to keep windows 7 after the beta ends?
Hi i just downloaded windows 7. i was just woundering if we get to keep the system after the beta ends or do we have to pay after to keep it?

Are you speaking about theRC ?If so,then yes you can keep it. But noit won't run beyond June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours.See Windows 7 Release Candidate

And in case you were wondering, you don't get a free upgrade to the RTM!
July 17th, 2009 9:58am

The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1, 2009 and the RC will expire on June 1, 2010. To avoid interruption, you'll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning, and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. When you install the final version of Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean installation. So plan on backing up your data then reinstalling your applications and restoring your data.

No you can not install the full version over the beta. BTW the beta will be totally expired by the time you can buy the final version from the shops (it expires end of this month) so either move to the RC (do clean install) or go back to vista (also clean install). If you go back to vista you can upgrade to win7 when it is available

Just consoled a gent in Germany who's downright peeved because the special pre-order priced copies sold out in like 5 minutes in his neck of the woods. You'd think they were mid-field seats at the World Cup or some such.

Steffen -You can contact HP and have them send you media. I'm not sure what the shipping costs would be, but the disks are free (except for shipping). Note: the shipping and handling costs HP charges tend to be somewhat outrageous BUT, it's still cheaper than buying a full licensed copy of Vista. I would seriously NOT recommend downloading the Vista Home Premium ISO from any "shady" sites. Many virus authors have taken to modifying these ISOs and should you download and install it, you wind up with a computer that's instantly a member of someone's zombie army.

Actually, Wolfie, my experience with HP in this regard was dismal. Their Recovery CD is not the same thing as the bootable Windows disk you envision. Not at all. For example, the dv9720us driver support page only makes reference to Vista32 HPRecovery disks. (See the "CD-ROM order page - Recovery Disks" heading). As another example, the dv9700cto driver support page seems to have removed that heading altogether. I don't know when or where it went. Here's someone else's opinion on this matter: Can I buy the Vista CD from Microsoft since HP only sales the Recovery CD.Sometimes you're forced to be a zombie.

egads - Ok... So he gets the Vista disk image. He restores the image, and then runs the Windows 7 install. All Vista has to do is provide a launching point. No?Though, the only thing I would recommend doing - a clean install - unless there's something really compelling on the Vista image.

As I pointed out in those links above, the Recovery disk that's listed is for HP 32bit when it's even listed at all. Maybe after a hassle you can find the 64bit Home Premium Recovery image. As you so aptly pointed out, youmay become a zombie trying.

Hello i have a friend who have the CD/DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit but the difreens i the keys i hope becouse i need get it install a OS witch is Windows becouse i like Windows a lot better then Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty)? You are saying you want us to give you a key for a Vista install disc? Please clarify. If you lost your key, or are trying to get one, it isn't going to work, especially on a MS forum. You will have to buy Vista again if this is the case. (moderators, please correct me if I am wrong about this)Please try every solution given to your problem...and reply back with its results... - JoelbX

I think Steffen has stated he has a legitimate product key. But when he installed Windows7 beta/RC (or followng that, Linux), the D: HPRecovery Partition that contained the original Vista image got deleted. He's got no backup on CD/DVD to restore it. Uh oh. So he's unable to re-install Vista until he getssome form of Windows Vista disk. More concerning yet,he needs to re-install Vista in order to upgrade to Windows 7.Making things more difficult, he's got Vista Home Premium 64bit, which is pretty uncommonanywhere around here. But if he could get ahold ofa disk, he does have a legitimate product key. Wolfie recommended Steffen contact HP for a replacement Recovery Disk. I contributed some sour skepticism about that.Steffen does knowsomebody with some kind ofVista 32+64 disk. (Is it proprietary HP OEM or what?) Maybe he can use that disk with his own product key? But he fears that (friend's) disk is set up in some preventative way, like maybe it is somehow hardcoded to that other person's product key.So more simply, where can he get a generic Vista 32+64 disk to re-install? He would then activate it with his legitimate product key that came with his HP computer.I'd like to get an .iso of his friend's disk. :))

Joel -I think he's saying he's got the key - as well he should have... Unless he removed the sticker from the side of his case, he should be good to go - the problem is, he's got NO disk... What's unclear is what happened to the recovery partition. If he overwrote it or wiped it out, he needs a replacement.

Joel-I think I just said that same thing. With a bit more detail. But I am invisible.

At one point I needed the recovery disks for my HP pavillion and obtained them for a total of $16.00.They take overtwo hours to install however once installed they provided the install folder i386 and from this I made a bootable windows xp professional cd. The great thing was after I restored my computer I was able to get the product key using a key finder application. This keyis different then the one on the computer case. It's the oem key used to activate the computer offline in conjunction with HP oem bios files that came with the restore disks. So for $16.00 I extractedwindows xp from the restore disks along with the oem product key and bios files that match my HP BIOS so now my system never needs online activation and if ever I need to reinstall it only takes 17 minutes and with out the junkware and trialware. If it's not Mr. Seven it's not.

Holy mackerel. You separated-out theoem-ware? I talkedtheir ears off about that. Their TS hasn't even as much info on it as I do. They would just google the files Iwould tell them about. It was ridiculous. I did the best I could on my own. Like usual. The only bootable CD I have is the one I generated, a Recovery Disk, by using their utility. As far as I know, that would be theone-and-same thing theymight ship. Nothing as useful as a bootable Windows CD.Can you explainmore details? But I kind of suspect the Vista config is different.

Vista's probably a diffrent story but there is an option when using an autounattend answer file in 2000 and xp to have the i386 dir copied to the hard drive and HP does this for somereason.I found it in either windows or system 32. The identifier files (WIN51IP.SP2)etc. were on the root of one of therecovery disks. OEMBIOS.sig OEMBIOS.binand OEMBIO.dat were.cab files ini386 and matched my mother board and I used the keyfinder to get the offline hidden key so the only workI had to do was copy i386 and the identifier files to a boot cd, make an answer filewith the offline key, about 580 mb.If it isn't Mr. Seven it's not.
July 18th, 2009 8:28am

For vista you would probably just have to copy an anytime uprgade disk to a hard drive but replace theoemlicensefile with the one from the recovery set and burn. The only way to find the key is with a keyfinder so you would haveinstall fromthe recovery disk set initially to extract it. Should match you Mother board's bios and activate offline. If it isn't Mr. Seven it's not.
