Duplicate Folder names in Windows 7
Under Server 2003, with workstations running XP or W2K, all our users' data is stored in a network folder called \Users. Within \Users, each person has a data folder calledusername that holds their data.We are installing W7 (fresh installs on new PCs, not upgrades). In some cases BUT NOT ALL, the user data folder names have been changed fromusername to "Documents" (so we have \Users\Documents, rather than \Users\username.So far, this has resulted in 13 folders in \Users called "Documents."So, two questions: One, why are some username foldernames being changed to "Documents?"Two, how can multiple \Users\Documents folders co-exist?thanks,wrcopg

Do you have file extensions turned on? In other words, if the folders were documents.1, documents.2, etc. would you see the .1, .2, etc. file extensions? The option is in the Explorer Tools > Folder Options... >View tab, uncheck [ ] Hide extensions for known file types.-Noel

are you using folder redirection or roaming profiles? or both? or neither?check the properties on the folders on the server - are there differing shortfilenames?it's a basic rule of filesystems in general that there can't be 2 identically named object of the same type, in the same place.are you seeing junction points, folders, files or some other kind of object?your server will have the answers as to what is really there (which kind of object)this is really a "server" kind of question (even though it may be "caused" by win7)

First you may read the following article. The user profile folder structure is changed since Windows Vista. This article is for Windows Vista and also applied for Windows 7. Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide You may check folder redirection policies. Also be assure that if a domain user logged on both Windows 7 and Windows XP clients, their [username] folder and [username.v2] folders are separated.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I'd be curious whether the files actually have extensions that Windows is not showing... There is some magic involved with showing user directories having to do with hidden extensions. I'm wondering if that magic is going wrong. What does a (non-Windows) ls command (e.g., from the Gnu Toolkit) say is there? For example: C:\TEMP>ls -l c:\users total 48 drw-rw-rw- 31 NoelC 0 8192 2010-04-21 13:33 All Users drw-rw-rw- 24 NoelC 0 8192 2010-02-23 15:42 Christian dr--r--r-- 22 NoelC 0 8192 2009-07-14 03:12 Default dr--r--r-- 2 NoelC 0 8192 2009-07-14 03:12 Default User -rw-rw-rw- 1 NoelC 0 174 2009-07-14 00:54 desktop.ini drw-rw-rw- 25 NoelC 0 8192 2010-02-12 19:27 NoelC dr--r--r-- 11 NoelC 0 4096 2009-07-14 03:45 Public -Noel

Hi, This is happening due to the desktop.ini in the documents folder. Delete it and you will find the folders go back to their proper names. Ta, Adam
