Email stops working and reboot fixes it.
Once in a while, the email clients (both Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird) on a machine running Win 7 64-bit stops receiving email messages. Restarting these email client applications does not help. The only way that I have found working is reboot. I am wondering if anyone else has seen this. Any suggestions for fixing this without reboot. Unfortunately I cannot reproduce it at will but I am sure it will happen again because it has happened many times.hz

If it happens most frequently when the PC is idle for a while, check your power settings in Control Panel. Check your wireless adapter settings (if you have one) and your USB settings, if that applies. Go to Device Manager, and under the Network Adapters section, check the Properties for each one installed. Look on the Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." SC Tom -There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support.

Thanks for the tip.I cannot recall whether this happens after hibernation or long idle, but I am sure the network works and so does the Internet connection when this happens. Therefore I suspect this is not related to any device. hz

Thanks for the tip. I do have Norton Security Suite doing background scan periodically. Is it too late to stop the scan when this happens? I can not recall if this always happens after a scan which Norton notifies by a pop-up at the bottom-right corner. I will pay attention to this next time.hz
