Error message on shutdown
Nearly every time I shut down my computer, I receive the following error message: "the instruction @ 0x0012e5e8 referenced memory @0xffffffff The memory could not be read." If I ignore the options, the computer continues to shutdown without my intervention. If I respond to the options presented, the computer still continues the shutdown.1 person needs an answerI do too

These error messages are essentially meaningless except, perhaps, to the author of the software. Is there the name of a program or file associated with the error message, perhaps in the Title Bar of the error window?Do you have Windows XP service pack 3 installed? This also may be caused by malware. What antivirus application is active? Is it up to date?Download, install, update and run both of the following free anti-malware apps:MalwareBytes AntiMalware: malwarebytes.orgSUPERAntiSpyware: superantispyware.com

To answer your questions:The name of the program displayed is FreeAgentService.exe, "application error";I do have XP service pack 3 installed;I have MacAfee antivirus, which is current and up to date.Does that help narrow the problem down? I appreciate your answers, and will install the two apps you mention, unless the additional information I've provided leads you to a different suggestion. Thanks again for your help.

"FreeAgentService" is related to Seagate external hard drives, so presumably you have one of these and installed whatever software was bundled with it. Something apparently has gone wrong with one of these applications causing it to not shut down gracefully. In general, this software is not necessary for the use of your external hard drive. I suggest removing it following the directions here:http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=206311 If you want to re-install it later, either use the CD (if any) that came with the hard drive, the folder (if any) on the external hard drive that has the installer, or get it fromhttp://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&vgnextoid=1b0cfbbad0f89210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD
