Error report closely followed by scam phone call.__04 June 2010
Error report closely followed by scam phone call. (requesting £79 for a new Microsoft license). I'm in the UK.04 June 2010I, too, have just recieved a scam phone call shortly after submitting a microsoft error report. The caller was Asian like the others were and he pretended he was from Microsoft. He said I had downloaded a rogue file which was causing my computer to run slower and asked me to click on the start button and open the "run" command. he asked me to type in "eventvwr", this brought up a window called Event Viewer. He asked me to click on Application and drew my attention to Error symbols and Warning symbols in the opened list. He then asked me to click on System and see the symbols in that list. He then said he was going to connect me to a technician who would correct the faults on my computer but my license had expired and I had to buy another one through Paypal before the faults could be corrected. He quoted £79 when asked. He was going to tell me how to send him money through Paypal when I told him I was not going to send money to anyone. I said "for all I know, you could be a criminal trying to pull a scam. Anyone can phone up and say these things". Oops, I'd caught him out. "ARE YOU CALLING ME A CRIMINAL. WELL YOU GO AHEAD AND SPEND £200 ON A TECHNINICIAN BLAH, BLAH RANT, RANT", and then he slammed the phone down. He, he, he. ****.1 person needs an answerI do too

You right, it was fake call and NOT from Microsoft. Microsoft never call you unless you ask them to so and Microsoft Support are respecting customers and their call will be monitor to make sure customer are satisfy. They won't say something like criminal said. You might contact your Telephone company and report this.

I just recieved a call from the very same people (Fri 30th July 2010) out of the blue. 'Is your PC loading up slowly' 'is your net connection taking time to connect?' They told me to open up my application files to view errors and warnings in exact the same way as Trackyman up there, and yes after all of that and having been told my computer was basically dying, I was then told I would have to apy a one off fee of £79 to get it fixed! Alarm bells rang of course, I told him I have no way of paying this and that is when HE GOT PUSHY - 'do you have paypal?' 'do you have a credit card?' 'do you have a debit card?' 'can you use a family members card to pay if you do not have the funds yourself?' SERIOUSLY! I hung up and disconected my phone for a couple of hours.BE AWARE.

Today I was woken up with a phone call from a man with a strong, heavy, Indian accent who seemed concerned and knowledgeable about my computer, its slowness, error reports and told me it was corrupted. I asked him his name. I should have known it was a scam when he said "Will Smith". Which Indian man has that name? Which firm was at the back of him I asked, he garbled an unclear reply including "Microsoft."I asked for his firm's name & address: Computer Maintenance, 73 St. John Street, London. he said trying to make it garbled, but I insisted on him repeating it clearly. Then he asked me to switch it on and told me he would be with me and guide me as to what to d and took me through some procedures blaming its slowness on viruses and corruption, but he would help me. He took me to eventvwr and Application to look at all the red crosses and yellow warning signs. Then he put me through to the technician and my mind began to clear when he put an Indian woman on to me and she tried to get me to give her the number of my computer. When I couldn't she tried to guide me to find it. Then the rat I'd been smelling took shape and I challenged her for her name, phone number and firm: Lisa; 02081440285; Support virtual. Then I asked her if she was trying to sell me something, she couldn't deny it so I then put the receiver down.I am left not knowing what information they have got from my computer or when they can decide to invade it again.
