Thanks It solves the Windows Update problem, which is the principal reason I was researching the Event Viewer report. However, it may be several days before I know what impact getting Windows Update working again has on the two Event Viewer reports I posted above.Hope this helps, Gerry

Noel I resolved the problem by stopping the Windows Update service. Deleting the contents of the Software Distribution folder at c:\windows and restarting the Windows Update service. It took quite a while to to provide a list of available updates but it did and the updates (quite a number) downloaded and installed like a dream. I am not sure what caused the problem. One thoght I had was that it a trojan detected by AVG too late and something got removed after the damage was done. Luhe.Fiha.A Virus was my suspect but I could not prove it as I had deleted AVG files before I thought to look in the virus vault. This trojan has been doing the rounds gaining entry by a subterfuge.
