External Hard Drive Disconnects while doing a Windows 7 backup
I've been trying to backup my files using Backup and Restore onto a MyBook with 310 Gig Free. Allgoes well when suddenly the USB disconnects and the backup fails. I'm left with a partial backup on the external drive and no record of a backup in my scheduler.

R -What happens when you swap ports? Assuming your system, like everyone else's has more than one USB port...

I suspect that this issue is related to the power supply. You may directly connect to the hard drive with the computer without any USB hub. If it still does not work, un-plug other USB devices and try again.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hello R.Powell, With your MyBook Drive, do you have 1 or 2 usb cables running to the computer? You have one usb cable end going to the MyBook drive, then do you have 2 usb cable's going to your computer? It might be disconnecting from a Power drop. If you only have 1 usb cable going to the computer, it might not provide the voltage needed to run the drive. Thats why some external drives have 2 usb cables running to the computer, 1 for data and 1 for power. That is all I got on this topic, sorry. williamdinbc

William - Keep in mind that ONLY applies if you've got a smaller notebook type external drive. Larger 3.5" desktop enclosures typically have their own power supplies.

Hey Wolfie2k6, So true my friend, you are 100% correct. btw, what do you think will happen with a 2.5" SSD (solid state drive)? Do you think it would drop out on the power, or with no moving parts will it run with a single usb cable? I have no idea on this one, just wanted to throw it out there and see what the rest of you think will happen. Regards, williamdinbc
