File Sharing in Windows 7
I have been trying to figure out how to share files across Windows 7 machines. I have not managed to share any files, but I have torn all of the hair out of my head. Here's the problem: I have a WorkGroup at our office that has 5 computers connected to it. When I try to share a file with only specific users on the network, I can't. I right click on the folder, click "share with", and then pick "specific people". When I do so, I am not given the option to pick any specific users. Additionally, there is no "find people" option. I am simply given the option to add a homegroup or add everyone. I do not want certain users having access to the folder and therefore do not want to pick "everyone". That said, if I were to pick "everyone", the users I want to see the file can see it (along with the users I don't want to see the file). I have read several things about how "easy" it is to share folders on a HomeGroup. So I decided to set up a homegroup with the users that I want to share the folder with. While I was able to set up the homegroup, the other users still could not see the shared file. I figured this was a permission issue so I tried to name the specific users as having permission to view the folder. Windows stated that the specific users could not be found. Again, I clicked "everyone" and again all users on the network (including those I don't want seeing the folder) could see it. Does anyone have an easy solution to sharing the folder? This whole process has taken hours and hours and I still don't have the desired result. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance.

On the local machine that will serve the files, create identical user names and matching passwords. 1. Go to each workstation and open a command prompt. At the CMD prompt type WHOAMI 2. Go to the PC that will act as the file server and at the CMD type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 2. Create user names and passwords for the users that match those of the workstations 3. Grant permission to those users in the file share Miguel Fra | Falcon IT Services, Miami, FL www.falconitservices.com | www.falconits.com | Blog
