File folder date
When we copy a file from one drive to another the creation date of file or folder is changed to todays date or the date when files/folder get copied or moved, it should not change.
As, copying or moving a file/folder is not same as creating, right now whats happening for example the date of birth of any person changes if we move him from one place to another.
I guess this is an issue .

In fact, what you say seems logic, but is not correct.
When you copy a file, you create a new file and read all data from the originating file and write it to the new one. Hence the new file is created today: date created= today. However, the contents of the file has not been changed
so the "date modified" date does not change.
However, when you move a file, the filedata is not changed, nor does a new file needs to be created. You will see that when you move a file, both "date created" as "date modified" are retained. Only the "file accessed" timestamp will be
altered as you accessed the file to change it's properties.
I hope this answers your question.

Hi Senne
What i understood by your above comments is clone of the file is created when we copy any file so, the date of creation changed to todays date, thats perfect & working as expected.
But
As per your above comments if we cut(move) a file and place it in other location the creation date should not change, i tried it and found the date of creation is changed to todays date.

I tried this on my machine to verify, and it works fine. So i do need some more info:
You are moving files on local disks? Or does the action include network drives?
Is your system fully updated? What version are you using?
Which filesystem(s) are you using?MCP/MCSA/MCTS/MCITP

If i will able to replicate it again will let you know all the details.
Thanks for your advise.

Hi SenneVL,
Thanks for your answer. I, too, have similar problem. The "Creation" date still change even I used the "move" command.
I am moving from a external HD to either my local HD or another external HD. All 3 drives are NTFS formated.
I tried on my Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate edition. Yes, I have all the update as of today.
I like to point out that I want to keep both creation date and modified date when I "move" both
files and folders.
Here are some findings I have:
Using either "copy" or "move" commend, I can still have the "modified date" unchanged on
file level, let say it is a 2006 year file. Using "move" command, to move a folder and
files within the folder, it seems that it can keep both "date created" and "date modified" of the
files within the folder ONLY. However, the folder on the new destination drive still indicate the file "create date" as Today.
So, the current conclusion I have are:
At file level, we may be able to bypass by 1.) create and move the files into a folder first. 2.) then move to a new drive.
However, any folders in root or sub directory level, the creation still change.
My question/problem is, is there a way to keep the folder creation date also?
THanks
