Fixing a Step-by-step configuration error
Good MorningI have recently on a test unit tried to migrate an entire build (with several installed apps) to a different machine.I sysprep'd the old machine and using imagex catured the entire drive c:The wim file was then applied to the new box and then setupThe OOBE ran with no problems but when I logged in as either user on the machine and tried to run any installed application for example IE I got an error box saying that step-by-step configuration was incorrect and advises running winSxS. This happened on every application I tried to run.Not even the device manager shows up when.I have searched online and all the blogs point to a problem relating to DLL's and a manifest.I know that with Win7 the hardware is no longer an issue but that is the only thing that in this instance changed - If the oringal sysprep'd drive is then reconfigured everything on it works ok.Any help would be greatly appreciatedMany Thanks

Hello,I think the problem is caused by the answer file.My advice to you is to use Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2010 andWindows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows 7 to do deployment. It is more easier and user friendly. You can do all tasks like deploy, catpure image by a Wizard. If you have any problem about MDT and AIK, feel free to contact me.Thomas Lin

Hello ThomasThanks for the replyThere was however no answer file - The WIM was deployed in a PE environment manually using imagex /apply command.Windows will boot up with no problems at all and only show the problem when an app is run, but not all apps are effected - I can run the microsoft games eg solitaire and they work fine. This also effects the right click funtion on the "Computer" where Manage and properties dont open, but they do not give the step-by-step error :$There is a typo in the initial question. It is not step-by-step but side-by-side
