Thank you for your assistance Thahaseena M.No I haven't made any changes. It shuts down perfectly in safe mode all the time. While in normal mode it hangs 75% of the time and I have to shut it down manually.I assume it's a problem with a device. I went to the below site you sent and am trying to fix the problem. So far all the devices ae updated and none show a problem in operation. Is there an error log I can go to to see what is causing the hanging?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308029Thank you again.Eugenia S.

Hi,· Did you try the steps mentioned in the other article KB 831431 that I have mentioned in the previous post? Yes, you can check in the event viewer for any error messages or which program is responsible for this issue. I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned in the link mentioned below. How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XPhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427 Apart from that, I would suggest you to shut down the system after performing a clean boot and check whether the issue still persists. Follow the steps mentioned in the article given below. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" statehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 Thank you and Regards. Hi,You are a great help! I went back to article KB 831431. I had passed it because it referred to Norton antivirus 2003, which I don't have. If I log off instead of turn off NO Problem. I guess it has something to do with my antivirus, PC Tools. In the event log I checked for errors and found when the first hanging began, 6-24-10. It was the time when I had received a newer antivirus version. In the meantime I tried to perform a clean boot, but the Guided help will not download and states try later.Hopefully my problem will end.Thank you, Eugenia

Hi,· What is the exact error message that you get when you try to download the guided help for clean boot?· Which antivirus program are you using? Thank you for the update. As you have mentioned in your previous post, this issue might be because of the security software or any other third party programs that are installed on the system. I would suggest you to download the guided help in another system and then follow the steps mentioned to perform a clean boot and check which other programs other than the security software are causing this issue. Apart from that, I would suggest you to uninstall the security update that is installed on the system and check whether the issue is resolved. If that does not help then, I would suggest you to uninstall the security software that is installed on the system and check whether the issue is resolved. For further support, I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the security software.Note:The system will at risk if there is no security software installed on the system. Once done testing, install the security software back on the system. Thank you and Regards. If not already installed this suggestion should be tried first where Shutdown takes a long time.Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Servicehttp://snipurl.com/1pyo4u[www_microsoft_com] A snipped URL has been used to avoid providing a broken link. Another suggestion is to look through the advice in the next link:http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm This Article was written some years ago but much is still relevant today for those using Windows XPHope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Hello,I've tried now for a couple of days to download the guided help for clean boot, but with no success. It states, "Guded help can not be downloaded right now. Please try again later or try help and support." At help and support it directs me back to the guided help. There is also a boot clean for advanced users. It appears a bit complicated. If I print the directions and try it, will I have access to the computer if something goes wrong? I do not have another computer to download the guided help.I disabled the anti virus and it shuts down perfectly. The system I am running is PC Tools Spy Doctor with antivrus and Firewall Plus version 8.0 It appears to be the antivirus.I installed the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service, prior to disabling the anti virus and it still hung at shutdown.I had looked into the below link before and did what it had suggested without any resolution.http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm Thank you for your assistance.Eugenia
