Hard Drive noise: Sounds like when it turns off / Boot manager issue
Since using 7 one of my hard drives (don't know which one, I have 4), is making a noise like when it's going to turn off (It's like a "ta - ka" there are two noises one following the other). It doesn't do it constantly, just from time to time. I don't even need to be doing something on the PC. All my HD were working OK before 7. I still keep one of the HD with XP on it. If I boot in XP I don't hear the noise. I disconnected one of them and the noise is still there, so that is not the one. I can't disconnect the one with XP on it, because the Boot manager is there. In fact, I need to boot from the XP disk in order to get to the Boot Menu, If I start up using the 7 HD I get the Boot something is missing. Question 1: How can I know what HD is making this noise and why? Question 2: How can I make the W7 disk to boot without the other drive, so I can delete XP from it? Thanks! Willy.

Answer to question 1: Disable one after another each disk until you find the noisy one.Answer to question 2: You could use a freeware like Easybcd to create the bootmanager on the disk you want. (http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1)RegardsRem

First I would make sure that one of your disks isn't failing by downloading something like HD tune or using one of the less elegant options offered within Windows. "Clicking" is a bad sign. After you have made sure that the disks are OK, keep in mind that inactive hard disks can be spun down as part of power management and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. This behavior is controlled in Power management and I think the default is 20 minutes. You can obviously disable this if it bothers you. As far as changing the boot order, you could unplug the HD with XP on it and pop in your Windows 7 disk and boot off that. Then select Startup Repair . This will rewrite the boot loader. Make sure the Win 7 drive is set in the BIOS as the first one to boot. After you are booting directly into Windows 7, plug the XP HD back in and format it or whatever you plan on doing with it.
