Help needed with connecting my Windows 7 PC to my Windows XP PC
Hi,I am trying to set up a network connection between my windows 7 pc and my windows xp pc but cannot seem to get it to work at all. But then again I don't really understand what I'm doing!!I have followed the help suggestions bymaking sure every pc has the same workgroup name and installing the LLTD protocol on my xp machine. Now I'm stuck. The windows 7 pc can see the xp machine and I can click and copy files but I cannot network the pcs or have the ability to view the files offline (the option for offline does not appear on my list as suggested by the help centre). The xp machine does not appear on the network map.The help centre also says something about needing to open ports.....don't have a clue about that. Can anyone help?? Maybe give me a step by step guide? Thanks in anticipation.

I am having the same issue, although when I try to download the LLTD protocol, I get an errot message saying the service pack version of xp is newer than the download and is not needed. Ihave also made sure all pc's have the same workgroup name, but I can't connect the XP machine to the 7, or vice versa, to view files, and since my printer is hooked up to the xp desktop (the 7 pc is a laptop), I can't print anything from the laptop running windows 7. If anyone can shed some light on this problem, we would definatly appreciate it.

I am not so sure it is possible. We had the same problem early in the Vista time. I was able to get 2 Windows 7 machines to Homegroup pretty easily. So far it seems like more a file sharing service rather than a true network but I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet. Although I haven't spent a lot of time working on the networking issue you might make sure that it is possible before you spend a lot of intellectual time on it. Remember we are dealing with Microsoft here and selling more OS is a priority so not making it compatible with older OSs could be a real temptation to them. Hopefully someone way brighter than us will hop in and tell us not only that it is possible but how to do it. In the meantime I am back to using sneaker net when I need to send data to or from my XP box. Perry

Hi,Can you tell me whether the Windows 7 machine can be accessed on Windows XP machine? What do you mean that you cannot network the PCs? Do you like to access each of them in Network Place? If the Windows 7 machine cannot be accessed on Windows XP machine, you can try the following steps.1. Temporarily turn off firewall on each machine. 2. Assure the following services are started: Computer Browser, Server, Workstation 3. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP. 4. Write down the computer name for Windows XP. Click Start button in Windows 7 and type \\XP computer name, and then press enter. Can you access the Windows XP computer now? Regarding the Offline files, you can refer to the following links:How to use offline files in Windows XPUse Offline Files When You're off the NetworkThanks, Novak
