Homegroup and Upgrades
I upgraded my system from Windows Vista to Windows 7,the softwarewont let me join a homegroup because it says my wireless network is not at the home location. While proforming the upgrade I was asked any questionsabout networking. It detected my network and I can surf theInternet. I can even see others computers on my network. I just can't create or join a homegroup. Isthere something I am missing or have I found a bug?

Set up the workgroup and sharing manually: CREATE WORKGROUP Add a Windows 7 computer to a workgroup by going to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > System > Advanced System Settings (in the left pane) > Computer Name Tab > Change, type the Computer Name and Workgroup Name. > OK. Make the computer name meaningful to aid recognition. The computer should restart. FOLDER SHARING First of all, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced Sharing Settings and make sure you have Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing and Public Folder Sharing all set to On and Password Protected Sharing to Off. To share a Windows 7 folder, right-click it > Properties > Sharing Tab > Advanced Sharing > Share this folder > Apply, OK > Close. You only need to share the highest level folder, e.g. not every sub-folder. Two little people should appear on the icons of the folders that are shared. An alternative way of sharing is to drag the folders you want to share to the Public folder. As you dont have Password Protected Sharing turned on, you have to change the security permissions on your folder(s) to allow Everyone access. Right-click the shared folder > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add and type Everyone (not the quotes) into the box and OK. Tick the boxes next to the permissions you want to allow (e.g. Read or Write, etc.) then Apply > OK, etc. You may see some screens coming up with message 'An error occurred while applying ..'. This is not unusual and can be ignored by clicking Continue.

My problem is I can't my windows 7 machine to see other computers in my network. I have an xp laptop, vista laptop, 2 xp desktops, and the windows 7 laptop. All the other comps can see each other, but not the windows 7. I tried to turn network discovery on, but everytime I hit ok and open it back up the network discovery isn't on its on the off position. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center. You will see, "view your active networks". Right below that you will see one of the three, Home Network, Work Network or Public. If you click on the name set it to "Work Network". With Homegroup, it will only work with other computers that have Windows 7.
