How To Share to a HDD and/or a partition between VM and the Client Host Simultaneously

Hi Folks,

I am setting up a simple Lab on Windows 8, soon to upgrade to 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V. I have 3 TB of disk space over 2 HDD. I have also been running MultiBoot with 3 OS's, 8.0 Pro, 8.1 Pro Preview and 8.1 ENT Preview. I have 2 Data partitions that I need to be able to access from the VM and one of the Client Hosts at similar times. I have taken the HDD offline and attached it to the VM which worked fine but that way is a hassle. I find it interesting that it is easier, so far, to share between the 2 environments with my 7 TB of NAS over 3 NAS Drives. I am trying to determine if Hyper-V is better than multiboot. So far it is not in my Lab situation. I have been watching allot of MS videos and Jump Starts but so far I haven't seen a solution.

Best regards,

Windows only supports this if clustering or using a file server.

Otherwise, there is no magic that Hyper-V can do to make this happen as only one OS can have read/write access to any volume at any time without clustering or being behind a File Server.

Even with Server 2012 R2 you have shared VHDX (between VMs), but you still need to have clustering in the VMs to make it work.

Hi Brian,

Thank You so much for your explanation and confirmation. I have much to learn before I get into clustering. I also have a problem getting "File Server Resource Manager" to start properly because WMI objects are not loading??? I don't understand this at all because I am able to access them with other Apps, etc. I have been over my Services list as well but have not yet discovered which Service turns on/off "File Server Resource Manager". I believe the Firewall is OKAY but I am still investigating that, not being sure what I am actually looking for? I do have the Server Tools Installed for Windows 8 as well as the Windows Updates applied, which is where I got  "File Server Resource Manager" in the first place. I have had WMI and Powershell 3.0 Package, installed since Windows 7.

If there is anything you could share on this problem I would be much obliged.

Thanks again,

 Crysta
