How can we configure Windows 7 system to use static gateway
Dear Sir, I have 2 proxy servers, 172.16.0.85(MS Forefront TMG2010) and 172.16.0.6 (MS ISA 2004). Computers are assigned IP address through DHCP with 172.16.0.85 as the default gateway. 172.16.0.6 is another proxy server which has limited rules & used for specific users. For me to test, I usually just set the default gateway as static in the IP properties on my windows XP machine. Now that I have a windows 7 machine, when I set the default gateway and do ipconfig, both 172.16.0.6 and 172.16.0.85 are listed. When I do a tracert, it goes through the 172.16.0.85 proxy server. The only way I have been able to force my system to use the 172.16.0.6 gateway is by setting TCP/IPv4 to a static IP and default gateway. How do I get Windows 7 to use the static gateway of 172.16.0.6? Kindly help to resolve this ASAP as many of our users who are using this 172.16.0.6 gateway going to shift from Windows XP to windows 7. Thanks in advance. Regards,

How about tackling this problem at the root and just assigning the correct gateway using DHCP?

Dear Sir, Thanks for quick reply. We can not use a second gateway 172.16.0.6 in DHCP as we do not want to receive this gateway to all users because this proxy server(172.16.0.6) has very limited rules i.e most of the URLs are opened & that are for specific users. So we want to set this gateway on that users systems manually. On another proxy server (172.16.0.85), we have blocked most of the social network URLs for all users so we added this gateway to DHCP so that all users automatically passes through this gateway. In windows XP, this configuration is working fine, but in windows 7 as discribed above, though we set maual gateway in TCP/IP properties with dynamic IP from DHCP, traffic goes through the DHCP assigned gateway (172.16.0.85) only. Is it a windows 7 problem? Kindly help to come out from this issue. thanks in advance, Best Regards,

So what you are intending to do is have DHCP enabled but manually set a gateway? You should not do it like that. Why don't you configure the proxy server in the Proxy Settings. You can find this in: Control Panel => Internet Option => Connections => Lan Settings

Dear SIr, Thanks again. I have 2 proxy servers out of wich one (172.16.0.85) is configured in DHCP. So my windows 7 system receive IP, gateway (172.16.0.85) & DNS automatically from DHCP. But I do not want this particular Windows 7 system to use this 172.16.0.85 gateway which is received automatically from DHCP. I wan this system to use 172.16.0.6 gateway. So I set manual gateway 172.16.0.6 in TCP/IP properties. Now when I do ipconfig, both 172.16.0.6 and 172.16.0.85 are listed. I set the same gateway (172.16.0.6) in Control Panel => Internet Option => Connections => Lan Settings also. But still when I do a tracert, it goes through the 172.16.0.85 proxy server. Hope this clears your doubts. Thanks & Regards,

Well then I would recommend you make a reservation in DHCP for the clients you wish to configure with a different gateway and manually configure those machines. Then manually configure those machines with a static IP/DNS and Gateway.

Dear Sir, Thanks for reply. We are following the same what you suggested. But it is not solution. Why this is happening with Windows 7 but not with Windows XP. Is it a bug in windows 7? What is a solution for this problem. Any from Microsoft can explain this? Thanks & Regards,

Hi, How do you change the default gateway in Windows XP? Try to run route add command lines to add a static route which has the highest metric. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc757323(v=ws.10).aspx Ivan-Liu TechNet Community Support

Dear Sir, Thanks for reply. As previously explained, in windows XP, I just enter gateway (172.16.0.6) manually in TCP/IP properties and this system too receives IP, gateway (172.16.0.85) & DNS automatically from DHCP. When I do ipconfig, both 172.16.0.6 and 172.16.0.85 are listed. When I run tracert, it goes through manual gateway 172.16.0.6. But the same is not working with windows 7. I have tried your suggestion, but it is for Windows Server 2003 & not for Windows 7and also not working. Kindly help to resolve this. Thanks & Best Regards,

Hi, You may create another DHCP server and set 172.16.0.6 as gateway, pay attention to the IP address range.Ivan-Liu TechNet Community Support
