Im running windows 8.1 my OS is scheduled to reboot in one day and start the windows 10 upgrade, but I have decided I do not want to upgrade at this time, Is there a way to cancel it?
thank you in advance.
1) Open the start menu and search for "View installed updates".
2) Search for KB2990214
3) Right click and press "Uninstall".
4) Reboot and run Windows update again.
Hi jeffrrr61,
As far as I know, the upgrade assistant is named GWX.exe in C:\Windows\System32\GWX. If you do not want to upgrade at this time, you can remove this program from your PC. Go to Windows Update->Installed update, remove KB3035583. Also, you need to hide the update again in windows updates to prevent it from auto installing again since this is marked important.

George ZhaoNormally that is the answer George, but it appears you cannot use Windows Update when it is ready for the upgrade. It will only tell you to reboot to continue. Which means you can't remove or block updates, or whatever else.
If the OP is at this stage, I have yet to hear how to cancel the upgrade.
HELP!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting the same issue. I CANNOT cancel the WIndows 10 update. I would like to install the other updates but it immediately starts "Downloading Windows 10"!!!
I've deleted all the KB installed items above, none are left (3 deleted)!
I've hidden the Windows 10 Update in the "Optional Updates" window.
I do NOT want any part of Windows 10 and cannot stop it. ANYONE?????
Thanks so much!!!
Not only do you need to remove certain updates, but you need to then hide them so that they do not appear again. Updates to hide on Windows 8.1 are these:
KB3035583
KB2976978
KB3044374
It seems only 3 updates govern whether the update comes down or not.
"If it's a Win7 SP1 computer and KB3035583, KB2952664 & KB2990214 are listed in Installed Updates, the Win10 installer files will be downloaded via Automatic Updates."
from here, see Robear's post:

Thanks for the responses. Tried ALL of the above. Still getting "Windows 10 downloading" when I try to do the other updates!!!
Bummer, I guess I can't update Windows for now.
Thanks again!
I uninstalled KB3035583 which got rid of the Win10 upgrade icon in my task bar tray.
I have also uninstalled KB2990214, but, like Rick, I still see "Windows 10 downloading". However, the Windows 7 updates I select ARE BEING INSTALLED. Although I don't see the progress during installation, the updates do show as successfully
installed when I view the update history.
Not sure what you meant: "but the updates ARE"... Is Windows 10 updating? Or just downloading?
Thanks!!!!
