How do I customize the default settings for the 'Select Attachments' Window?
Usually when I attach a doc to an email message, most of the time the file I want to attach will be the most recently saved file in My Documents. So I go thru the following routine each time the 'select attachments' window pops up- I point to 'My Documents' I change the User View to 'Details' I click the 'Date Modified' column so the files are shown in decending order Then I click the file I want to attach My question is....Is there a way to customize Win 7 and change the default settings for the Select Attachments window? I'd like the window to open in Details View with the Date Modified column presorted every time I attach a file.

You don't say what e-mail program you are using and the answer to yourquestion may depend on what program it is.But you might want to consider doing the following: instead of doingit the way you are, open "Computer," navigate to the folder the fileyou want is in, then drag the file to the e-mail message. You couldkeep the "Computer" view and sort whatever way you prefer it in.I can't be sure this method works in *every* e-mail program, but itdoes in many of them.Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003Ken Blake

Thanks Ken. I use gmail for personal and a different web-based program for work. Clicking the 'attach file' button in either program brings up the same default windows box. I recall running across a windows tips site several months ago that showed how to customize that window. I should have saved it.

You may change the following Registry keys. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Personal HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Personal Change the value of the keys to the name of the folder you would like to open when attaching files in email. However, some programs may ignore this keys. We do not know if Gmail will do. If the issue is not resolved after modifying the values, I suggest you contact Gmail support for more assistances.
