How do I stop Windows 7 from changing the path of a shortcut to a mapped drive if the drive shows as disconnected?
How do I stop Windows 7 from changing the path of a shortcut to a mapped drive if the drive shows as disconnected? I have cases where I need to map a drive to a folder on the same machine. For some reason when I reboot or start that machine, the mapped drive
doesn't reconnect until I double click on it in explorer or "my computer". If the user tries to open that program from a shortcut on the desktop, Windows sees that the mapped drive isn't available and then says "oh wait! I see what you want on c:\share....
I'll change my settings to that" I want to stop it from doing that and keeping the original settings.
Thanks

Hi,
I would like to verify the error message you received?
Based on my test, Windows 7 should not change the path of a shortcut from mapped drive if the mapped drive disconnect.
When you map a network drive, select the option “Reconnect at logon”, also make sure the drive letter
is not used by another external drive.
Furthermore, please make an error screenshot to me, you can
Upload to SkyDrive.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi Leo,
Well that's just it. There is no error. To reproduce the problem I can...
1. Create a folder like c:\apps\public
2. Share the public folder
3. Map a drive to it. Say Z: for example.
4. Create a shortcut to any executable in that public folder. (From the Z: drive)
5. If you look in the properties window of that shortcut you'll see Z:\program.exe under the "Target"
6. Now disconnect that mapped drive and double click on that shortcut. The program will start. Even though you removed the mapped drive.
7. Now look at the Target properties of that shortcut. It will now say C:\apps\public\program.exe.
I want to prevent the shortcuts Target from being changed.
PS. This isn't just one computer doing this. We have dozens of clients across the country with the same issue.
Thanks

Hi,
I’m a bit confuse with step 3:
Map a drive to it. Say Z: for example. So I want to verify this situations:
1 Does the map drive from network?
2 How do you map a network drive to a share folder?
Base on my test, if I map a network drive in Windows Explorer, and make a program shortcut form the map drive to
the share folder. Then I disconnect the map drive, run the shortcut. Yes, the program will start, but you can see the map drive have re-connected. And I check the target properties of that shortcut is not changed.
That’s quite difference result, maybe I miss something to follow the steps. So, if you are feel free, please
make a screenshot of the folder and the map drive for me to clear your workaround.
Thank you for your understanding.
