How to find out which program a the default beep is coming from in Windows 7?
There's a "default beep" (as defined in System Sounds) that emanates from my computer every so often. It kind of goes like this (where each number is a "default beep" sound): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So there's a distinct pattern to it. I thought I had this figured out a way to figure out what was happening by going to Control Panel->Ease of Access->Ease of Access Center->Replace sounds with visual cues But that just isn't the case. Whichever window I click on, that one displays the visual queue when this happens. It's driving me crazy, and I can't figure out which program is causing this. Update : it appears to only happen on one user profile on the computer...does that help? As suggested to me on this thread I tried using the Process Monitor to narrow down the source of the problem. This worked sort of, and I narrowed it down to PC Tools Spyware Doctor, but after I sent the log file from Process Monitor to PC Tools they said they couldn't find it in the log. I still have the Log that took, it is located here, if you wish to download it: http://drop.io/achen10 password: pctools My laptop is a Best Buy, ASUS G51VX-RX05 If you have any ideas after looking at the logs or have solved this problem before please let me know, I'm desperate to figure this out. Thank you, Andrew J. Leer

Hi Andrew,Why not try to reinstall the Spyware Doctor? As you have found it is the cause using the Process Monitor. If you don't want to get the beep sound, you can try the following methods to disable it.method 1. Right click the Sound icon in the taskbar, and choose sound. In the Program Events list, click on Default Beep, then select None Under Sounds list. Click the OK button to save the changes.method 2: open Device Manage--> select 'Show hidden devices' In the View menu->Expand the list of devices under 'Non-Plug and Play Drivers' and select Beep-->Right click the Beep item and select Properties-->go to the Driver tab-->In the Startup section, scroll down the Type list, select Disable and click the OK button. After a restart, the system beep should be disabled.I hope this can help you. John

John, Thank you for your suggestions! I'm more concerned with the underlying problem. I don't wanna just ignore the sound incase something is really wrong. I've already re-installed Spyware Doctor, that didn't seem to fix it. Did you find the source of the sound in the log I uploaded? Because I "caught it in the act" just as the sounds were happening using the process monitor, and that is when I generated the log file. What is the beep service for? Does it come from the motherboard? I'm only concerned that maybe something is wrong with the laptop and if so I'd like to find out what it is... Then again, it doesn't really seem to occur on other usernames on the laptop, so that kinda makes me wonder if it isn't something else that I have installed. Spyware Doctor runs on those other accounts too, so I'm not sure. pcstray.exe is the file I saw it coming from in the log files, but I haven't been able to replicate that search, so I'm not sure if I saw that or not.

Hi Andrew,As the beep sound just happened in one account. If you want to exclude the Spyware Doctor from cause, you can try to remove the Spyware Doctor from your machine, then test if you have the beep sound in that account. If the sound disappeared, we can conclude the trouble is caused by the program. If not, the trouble should be caused some incorrect settings in your current account. As your other account are fine, to save your time, you can refer to the following link to fix your corrupted user profile: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profileI hope this can help you.John

Okay I figured it out, and it wasn't Spyware Doctor. I discovered that this sound was coming from a utility on my laptop called ASUS NB Probe; I'm certain that it is emanating from this program because the error message displayed by it changes in sync with the sound playing. Apparently the S.M.A.R.T. feature of my hard drive was reporting an issue. It displays the issue for a brief second and then makes it disappear, I'll have to keep watching it to see what it says, but I believe is says something about a read. I have an external hdd connected with eSATA to a container of sorts (BlacX) that you can plug two hdds into. I have one hdd attached and it's a Western Digital WD1001FALS - 00E8B0 Thanks again! Now I'm off to go around the Internet and report on this...since I posted it so many places! - Andrew
