How to set up a VPN for my home network.
I want to know if I can set up a VPN for my home network so I can access it from my laptop when I'm at school. My home net work isn't server based its just client to client based. Also I have DSL and my ip is dynamic. Is there anyway this is possible being
I don't have a static ip address? I'm a networking student at a local Technical college but seems like the things you want to learn they aren't interested in teaching so thought maybe I could get some help here. If anyone knows how I can accomplish this please
let me know. I should have mentioned that I'm running Windows 7 ult on my main pc at home and Win 7 hm prem on my laptop.

In Windows 7 you have another thing called Direct Access but either you use VPN or Direct Access you should have server but you may look for third part software to do that. But if you just want to access your PC at home you may try to use Remote Desktop.

To implement a VPN server in your home, you should have:
1- A static IP
2- A server with at least two network card

Using Port Forwarding on your router for direct Remote Desktop access is certainly possible - I know several people who do it - but it isn't secure and thus is a "bad idea". Your idea of a VPN is the better way to go, but your school has to allow VPN
access through their firewall.
On your end, at home, you'll need one of two things - a router that can serve as the VPN endpoint, or a server system that can. You don't need a static IP (although it helps), you'll just need to keep track of the IP that your ISP assigns to your home
connection and adjust your settings accordingly. You don't really need two network cards in your server either, you can set it up with just one, but it'll slow your link down a bit because the card's pulling double duty.
