IDE to USB drive enclosure & drive not found
I bought a IDE to USB 2.5" drive enclosure. I installed the hard drive from my laptop to backup the files as both the LCD backlight and the power switch went south. The green power light comes on. I’ve tried several USB ports but the drive is not seen by Windows 7. The drive is a Fujitsu MHU2100AT. Why isn’t the drive recognized? The specs per Gateway are: Feature Description Manufacturer Fujitsu Model MHU2100AT General Capacity (GB) 100 Total user sectors 195,371,568 Disks 2 Data heads 4 Buffer size (KB) 8,192 Interface ATA-6 Sector size (bytes) 512 Data transfer rate( internal ) Maximum 45.5 MB/s Performance Positioning time (ms) Minimum Track-Track 1.5 ms (typical) Average Read: 12 ms (typical) Maximum Full 22 ms (typical) Rotational speed (rpm) 4,200 rpm Latency (average ms) 7.14 ms Start Time ( typical ) 3.5 sec. If you can see an entry for the drive in 'Disk Management' and it doesn't show any partitions as being present, or if you can assign a drive letter but don't afterwards see your directories and files properly listed, don't panic. Don't go'trying stuff' just to see what happens. There is a possibility that the partition table and/or file table could have become corrupted, especially if your laptop has suffered power-related problems. If this has occurred then there's a good chance that a data recovery progman could be able to regain your files for you.If you cannot 'see' the drive listed at all in Disk Management then check to see that you've correctly fitted it to the enclosure, and that the enclosure is indeed compatible with your drive. Finally, if it turns out that the drive itself has gone belly-up then consider how precious and irreplaceable the data on it is to you. Professional data recovery forms can retrieve data even from mechanically dead drives, but their services can be expensive.

just wondering, does windows recognised that a device is connected in the first place? I really recommend that you use two-headed USB cable, one of which provides additional power. I had an experience with HD DVD drive that I took out of my laptop (because I replaced it with BD). I use IDE to USB too. I decided to buy that two-headed USB cable, and it worked. But of course it will use two of your USB ports. if you are wondering what it looks like, try this: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/images/0/01/USB_dual_power_cable.jpg

Windows 7 won't 'recognise' the external enclosure if the drive in that enclosure appears as one which is empty of contents. If the partition and/or file tables have ben damaged then the drive would appear (to Explorer) to not be present. Thus the 'wisdom' of checking Disk Management. Unpartitioned drives show up there!

I have not tried this tool myself but have had reports from other folks that it works quite well: TestDisk It's OpenSource and is released under the GPL. From their web site: * Fix partition table, recover deleted partition * Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup * Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector * Fix FAT tables * Rebuild NTFS boot sector * Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup * Fix MFT using MFT mirror * Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock * Undelete files from FAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem * Copy files from deleted FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3 partitions. If all else fails, it might be woirth looking at.

I just got through doing this with a drive and couldn't figure it out. I had to crack it open. It was set to Master. Should be fine right? Apparently not. Had to set it to Cable Select, close it back up and turn it on for it to be found by windows and installed properly. Maybe its the same for you...Anything worth doing is worth doing right. Had to set it to Cable Select That's unusual. Generally IDE external enclosures require the jumper setting to be configured as 'Master'.

Yeah, I know. Drove me nuts because I checked it much earlier in the process to make sure it was on Master. It never worked until I gave up and started from scratch by verifying all of my settings. Until I moved it to cable select it would see the disk and try to install the driver but it took a LONG time and then would fail. Cable Select fixed it. I actually didn't think it was that at all so I left the case open and plugged it in so I could reverse the change quick. It worked, I formatted and then had to shut it off and button it back up. Power On (green light glowing) Never mind! The bloody fool female connector wasn't connecting to all the male pines. I had to perform some gentlr surgery on the circuit board. Thanks! Für Elise - Support the Heart & Breast Cancer Foundations.

HI, I have a similar problem. However the poweron light goes green, then red. I am not able to do any of the above to resolve. My disk is a Fujitsu MHV2120AT. Could it be installed incorrectly? Thank you.
