IE9 slow after KB2718704 patch - what gives?
For the last few days, our end users have reported slow Internet access and with one of our programs that uses .NET framework and is viewed in IE9. After intensive monitoring of our network bandwidth which is current well below limits, and several searches on the Internet, my assistant and I found references to the KB2718704 patch slowing IE9 in many more systems since its release last week. Several network admins have mentioned that they have told their end users to stop using IE9 and use Firefox until Microsoft released another patch. Some have even uninstalled the patch with marked improvements immediately. After some careful deliberation, we too uninstall the KB2718704 patch, and our complaints of a "slow" network or slow Internet access went away. The application that we use daily on everyones workstation relies on .NET and has to be viewed in IE9 to work with the software (Firefox or other browsers is not an option). The patch to close the certificate problem just made our systems unbearable slow. Does anyone have a work around to keep us secure yet not slow IE9 to a crawl? Or better yet, does anyone know if Microsoft has another patch or solution that will work besides the KB2718704 patch that seems to me has not been thoroughly tested? Thanks J

1. You can uninstall the troublemaking updates and block reinstalling. Report this error to Microsoft. (Perhaps the right place for doing it is here http://connect.microsoft.com/ 0 2. There were numerous problems with .NET since updates that aimed at .NET were issued in mid of May (do not know exact date and time.) The only solution that helped in majority of cases were based on removing .NET and installing "fresh copy" Regards Milos

Also you can try to repair .NET framework like below: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2009/03/04/9459067.aspx If the issue persists, I suggest to run IE with no add-ons mode: Open Start Menu, then click all programs, select Accessories, open the system tools;Right-click Internet Explorer(No Add-ons), run as Administrator. Or Reset IE advanced settings. Furthermore, try to temporary remove IE9, and use IE8 for test: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/how-do-i-install-or-uninstall-internet-explorer-9 Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support If you are TechNet Subscription user and have any feedback on our support quality, please send your feedback here.Leo Huang TechNet Community Support

Our fix for this issue was to remove the offending update (approved for removal in WSUS), then once the computers were accessing the IE9 pages at regular speeds again, we just manually downloaded the required cab files from Microsoft and installed the .ctl files manually, which is what the update was suppose to do automaitcally. Even after the install of the new .ctl files manually, no performance issues were noticed in IE9 and speeds in accessing pages and our application were back to normal. The update is broke and the fix is to install the updated .ctl files manaully.
