Presumably you mean the search box is not appearing when you click the Orb (Start). If so, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off in the left pane.

It depends how you define sidebar...Windows 7 has gadgets like in Vista but it doesn't have an actual sidebar to contain them. I solve this by hooking up two monitors and using one just for things like iTunes and gadgets.
