I can't get Homegroup to work
I have 2 Win 7 machines. One Ultimate and the other Home Premium. Both 64 bit machines. Both upgraded from Vista. On the desktop machine, I can create homegroup. On the laptop, ie Win7 home premium, I get error that I must enable IPv6. IPv6 is enabled. Both machines are less that 30 days old..What is wrong? You can cancel this message as I am going back to Vista.

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. Can the laptop detect the HomeGroup in Windows Explorer or the Network and Sharing Center? Please run Homegroup troubleshooter to automatically fix the problem first. Open the HomeGroup troubleshooter http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-HomeGroup-troubleshooter If the issue persists, please temporarily disable Windows Firewall and see if it works. I think that you have missed the point. Homegroup needs IPv6. Laptop has IPv6 enabled. Windows 7 does IPv6 is not enabled. Since I have gone back to Vista on all my Windows 7 machine like I said in a previous message. Olease cancel my question and Homegroup until I decide to go back to Wun 7. thanks

Why did you even post then? If you aren't going to be productive don't post.HomeGroup works via IPv6 but wireless seems to be a bug that has been recognized by Microsoft. A fix hopefully will be pushed

Homegroup is another usless technology that MSFT created. It's suppose to be easy centralised way of organising file shares. but its all fluff and not the ideal way to share files. The old but more usefull workgroup requires user cedentials on all computers, but you can get around it by following below. the easiest way to share files printersin a small lan with any windows computer Windows 98, ME, XP, Vista, and 7 is to first go contol panel (XP, Vista, and 7 only) and enable file and print shareing in fire wall, ensure all computers are in "Workgoup" (in Mycomputer properties, cpu idenity, change. (the default should be workgroup). browse to the folder you want to share, right click share ... (in vista and 7 select advanced share) for share permissions ensure that everyone has full controll. In XP, vista, 7 go folder properties and select security, add group everyone and ensure only read, execute, and List folder contents are checked off. Ok. You place a password to protect your files. If you know how to use SAMBA you can even share with MACs and Linux OS with workgroup.Homegroup only does Win 7

Troubleshooting didn't work.I found a solution that worked for me.I installed Ultimate on a desktop and laptop.I used the password the Win 7.On the desktop, I changed the password from the microsoft password to the machine's password. Then I laptop saw the new homegroup. I added the desktop password. Now I have a Homegroup.
