Jack that did not work, butI go the following error.WinSock statusinfo\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F3C03633-D181-4697-8AD2-902147351631} protocol is not found in Winsock catalog.errorNot all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed.action Automated repair: Reset WinSock catalogaction Successfully executed: netsh winsock reset catalogInfo System restart requiredWhen I rebooted I had the same symptoms as before.“This is only affecting http and https external to my home network and I can use IP addresses, DNS will not resolve the host name of the website to ip address.NetBIOS is ok and I can access the networked harddrive and the networked printer, by host name and by ip address.”It is, as the DNS Client is just not working. Anyway, I searched the forum and fond one of your other suggestion “Windows Repair Reinstall” that did work after a few hiccups.“With XP you can do a refresh install without really touching the current applications and data.Refresh XP Installation. Boot from the XP original CD. Skip the first screen that offers Console Repair, and continue as though you install a New XP.After you Agree etc., the new install screen will come on and would detect the current XP installation.Choose the Repair option by Pressing R for Repair.Use it, would take about 45Min. and you will have a Refreshed Installation of XP while keeping all your data and XP configuration.”The hiccups wereThe windows CD only had SP1 slipstreamed [it was a really old install] and the desktop only had USB mouse and keyboard connected to it [and there were no old mice or keyboards in the “stuff box” in the back of the closet anymore :>] (note: some OEM keys may not work anymore, lucky had another unused CD)Anyway, halfway through Repair Reinstall, the USB mouse and keyboard turnoff so I could not answer any of the “yes”, “no” questions. No Joy, so I had to shut it down and had a DOA system, searching for PS/2 mouse and keyboard.Found them yesterday and restarting the Repair Reinstall, breezing through it. You are correct it only took about 45 min, however :>You need to warn the naive user that the Repair Reinstall “resets” back to the service pack on the CD.So after reinstalling SP3, reinstalling IE8, 99 windows updates [three times through windows update (93, 5, 1)] and uninstalling and reinstalling HP’s networking printer software, all is good with the world and Windows XP is up and running and I do not have to reinstall all of the applications. However, the reinstall or SP3 installed unstated three Tun Miniport Adapters (#5, #6 & #7) with “code 10”, but not install the V6 TCP/IP stack.Since XP is “working”, so for now I am going to leave will enough alone. Thanks for work.
