Install Additional Features on Vista causes TrustedInstaller.exe takes 30 mins to complete!
Hi all, I'm not sure if this problem is common but I have a Vista 64 bit system here and I'm trying to install additional features(such as Telnet Client, Telnet Server...). When I invoke the "Turn Windows features on or off" it takes about 3-5 mins to populate the list (which is acceptable), however when I chose to enable additional feature such as Telnet Client, the process would just sit there for 30 mins plus. When I look at task manager trustedinstaller.exe is running at 40-45% during this time and when that finishedthen optionalfeatures.exe would run and finished the set up in a min or two. I took a closer look at what trustedinstaller.exe was doing that took so much time using Process Monitor and pretty much it scan through every thing in HLKM\Software which takes forever to finish. I was just wondering if anyone experience this and is there some settings I can change so that this "add features" thing does not take ridiculously long. Thanks!

I have this exact same problem. I have windows vista ultimate 64 bit. I left my computer on for several hours and it seems like it is not doing anything but making the the CPU fans spin faster because the cycles it is using. I was attempting to add SNMP in the windows features window. I even restarted and attempting to do the same thing again, still I get the same exact problem. Trustedinstaller.exe takes up about 50% of CPU cycles. I looked at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967256 and I don't think this is my problem. I have had my system for about 4 years. What is going on?

The same problem. My system runs for 6 months after a reinstallation.
