Installed Win7 SP1 and restarted com, only to be stuck at Windows Startup
I installed Windows 7 service pack 1, along with necessary security updates today. Upon restarting the system, the screen showed "configuration reached 30% complete, Stage 1 out of 4" before it automatically restarted. So far, the Windows start up page has been stagnant over 2 hours now! I am getting worried. Please help. If it is necessary to wait for a fairly long time, please advise on how long the start up should take. Thanks in advance for any help!

I had the same thing happen because I selected additional updates which were unchecked in Windows Update. I had to force a reboot (with bated breath) and found that SP1 had installed but the other updates which I had checked did not. Windows apparently left those updates unchecked because they conflict with SP1. I later went back to Windows update, checked and installed them.Hammer842

Sorry, I misread your post. ... Best thing to do is to force a reboot and tap the F8 key to enter the Advanced Boot Options menu. Choose the option "Last Know Good Configuration" to restore your system to before the SP1 install. When you try to install SP1 again, make sure you do NOT select any other updates in Windows Update.Hammer842

Thanks for your reply! Before reading your post, I had switched on my com and it had asked if I wanted to do a 'System Repair' as I had force shutdown last night. I did what was recommended, only to see that my computer couldn't detect any errors. I clicked finished and it automatically restarted. On restarting, my com applied the updates and stopped at '7616 out of 7818' before faithfully restarting again. I was hoping I could successfully start up my computer but the same thing happened again, having my screen stalled at 'Starting Windows'. I force shut down again. So after reading your post, I tapped the F12 button for Advanced Boot options menu, but all I could enter was Setup (F2). Hence I am unable to see the option "Last Know Good Configuration". I don't know why and it is frustrating me At this moment, I am running a 'Startup Repair', letting the computer detect if there are any errors with the disk. Would you have any ideas on how I can restore my system before SP1 install another way? Any help will be very very much appreciated at this point! Thanks!

Do you mean that there is a "Last Known Good Configuration" in the Advanced Boot Options menu but you can't select it? Have you tried tapping the F8 key during boot to see what options are available? If nothing else, it should allow you to boot into Safe Mode assuming that would work. Then you could access System Restore to restore your computer to a prior Restore Point. The only other thing I can think of is the Recovery Console which you can access from the Windows 7 installation CD. This might allow you to access System Restore, but I'm not really sure.Hammer842

Hi, How's going now? If you have a backup, you can do a system restore to the time point that everything works without issue. Then download and run the System Update Readiness Tool firstly. Then try to install the service pack again.
