Intermittent network failures
I'm having an issue with my machine where my network connection seems to drop most services at varying intervals. Mail and Internet are both out, but ping and IM continue to work. Rebooting fixes it, as does disabling/enabling the network connection. This happens multiple times a day, and is making it hard to work. Found various articles, but nothing seems to work. I've tried putting a brand new network card in the machine, but it's still an issue - so it's not a hardware problem. I'm fully Windows Update-d, and running SP3. Tried resetting WinSock last night, but still had trouble this morning. Don't know what else to try, and searching for "Network trouble" doesn't get me very specific details. Anybody have any ideas?Matt1 person needs an answerI do too

Please explain your network setup, workgroup, domain, router, isp, etc.Did you try a different network cable or switch port, anyone else / another machine having issues?Have you scanned you machine for malware or viruses?Any high processor or high network activity, when you are seeing the problem?

i'm on a domain with about 20 other users. nobody else seems to be having the issue. i have yet to try changing ports on the switch, or network cables, as connectivity does work some of the time, so i'm not convinced that it is a hardware problem at that level.no viruses/malware have been found in recent scans (with AVG 8.5).no processor issues either. just going along, and then mail stops sending and my browser stops working.

run a ping www.google.com -t and see if you are dropping any packets, run until the connection dropsif you see any dropped packets run a tracert www.google.com, look at where the packets fail

as i said above, ping continues to work even when the connection is down, so this is a protocol-by-protocol level issue. i know that IM and ping are still alive, but mail send/receive and internet browsing are the two that go away. so, it doesn't seem like an issue with any of the upstream equipment either.

Do you have any firewalls running? Is internet connection sharing running?Any VPN connections? When you say the im and ping are still alive, are these existing connections or new connections once the browser fails? Be sure to try new connections.

windows firewall is turned off. nothing else is present.haven't even heard of Internet Connection Sharing, but based on a quick search, no, it's not enabled.no VPN connections.i haven't tried closing IM or any conversations after i lose the connection. i can try it next time it fails. ping is a brand new ping that i can start after the connection is dead and will work properly.
