Is Vista Ultimate Remote Desktop the same as XP Pro Remote Desktop?
Is Vista Ultimate Remote Desktop connection the same as XP Pro Remote Desktop connection? I am able to VPN to my work network, but unable to connect via by Remote Desktop to my XP machine at work. If I use one of my other machines that have with XP Pro here at home I have no problem and remote right in after the VPN connection is made. Any idea's why Vista won't remote the XP machine? Thanks, Gregg

Unlike the normal Microsoft Windows XP mstsc binary, the Vista version of that binary allows for the full use of your computer screen if you own one of the fantastic widescreen displays, like the Dell models, or other such devices. You can use Windows Vista Remote Desktop on XP by following these steps: 1) Download all the files in this web directory: Click here2) Rename these two files(incase anything goes wrong): mstsc.exe, and mstscax.dll, both in your windows\system32 directory.3) Copy and paste the new Vista versions of mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll, into your system32 directory.4) In your system32 directory, create a new directory called "en-US" without the quotes.5) Copy and paste mstsc.exe.mui and mstscax.dll.mui, into the en-US directory6) Run mstsc.exe as per normal, and enjoy the new features allowed by the Microsoft Vista Remote Desktop client. For more information read this source . Try it on your own risk. Good luck

Thanks. I'm still trying to get pass this permission thing in vista. Even when I'm logged in as the Administrator it won't let me rename or replace the files. Mind bogging. I went into the permissions and set to allow full control of the folder and files and oh my goodness it allowed the permissions to be changed, but thing didn't work correctly. I tried to restore to an early date, but things still didn't work correctly (I didn't even rename the files or copy the new ones in to the directory). Is there a way round this permission thing to rename files or copy and replace files without changing all the folders involved? Thanks, Gregg

Ok I got around the permission stuff, after renaming the orginal files and coping the new files I tried to remote desktop my work computer and Remote Desktop shuts down. Through the problem solution Microsoft notified that I was running Beta Vista (which I'm not) and need to upgrade to the final version. I returned the original file to normal and deleted the other files. So I'm back Looking for help. Thanks for trying, Gregg
