KB2482017 failed ERROR MESSAGE Ox80246002
date: February 9, 2011
I've gotten 11 updates and only ten installed. KB2482017 won't install, I keep getting error message Ox80246002, which does not appear on any of the frequent error message topics. I'm not a programmer, have no idea what is going on. An older update to SP3
has been installed about 50 times since November, and after each successful acknowledgement asks to be installed again. Perhaps the problems are related? Please help!

When I tried to download the update separately from Microsoft it says that I am not running the correct browser. I am running IE8 on XP platform and all the other updates installed. Is this particular update only for 7? Then why did I receive it as part
of my automatic updates?
Thanks for any help.

Yeah, same here. I see that it applies to IE6 and up on just about all platforms and scenarios when I read the tech sheets but I get the same Setup Error, "The Version of Internet Explorer you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
I have eleven XP machines of varying specs in my shop and about half of them show this update in the high priority updates and half don't even have it listed. If anyone comes up with a solution, please post it ASAP. Thanks.

From - You receive a "0x80246002" error code when you use the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates
" This problem may occur if Windows Update or Microsoft Update determines there is a file hash mismatch when you try to search for available updates from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site. "
One of the resolutions for that error code on the KB article is to rename the Download folder where the updates are stored. The Download subfolder will be automatically recreated the next time the Automatic Update service searches for updates.
The second resolution is to attempt a manual download and installation of the problematic update.
Here's the link to Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2482017)
Suggest you give the manual installation resolution a shot if renaming the Download subfolder does not resolve the 'file hash mismatch' issue.

Update KB2482017 failed.
I had the same problem, and I offer an additional suggestion to MowGreen's response. I went to
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS11-003 - Critical
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2482017)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS11-003.mspx
Scroll down to the chart, find your version of Internet Explorer, then under that heading find your Windows operating system, then click on the 'highlighted' Internet Explorer link next to your version of Windows. That took me to a Microsoft
page where I could directly download this update. Worked fine. Figured I would add this information for anyone visiting who might have different versions of IE and Windows.

In response to MowGreen:
This might be a fix for individual systems, but patching through SCCM I don't see this as a solution for lots of 2008 R2 Servers. I hope a fix is coming out for this soon.

itriall3sports,
I agree, this workaround is not going to be very elegant for patching via SCCM. As this is a Security update and MS does not charge for supporting same, folks need to call in and report this issue. Otherwise, MS will never be aware of it -

billbo 72's post indicates that the update is not even an offered to some of the XP systems. If I'm interpreting this issue correctly, as this installation issue appears to only be occurring on XP systems with IE8 installed, the file hash mismatch
is probably in the file manifest of the update itself. That results in the setup error, "The Version of Internet Explorer you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
Resetting WU's components will most likely only result in the update history being deleted and another attempt to install an automatically downloaded copy of the Cumulative IE update will still result in the same setup error.
Be patient and I will try to find out if my interpretation is correct.MowGreen

My win7 x64 Ult refuses to install it with error 80070026. I've tried every trick I can think of and it's a no go. Direct install of the update, roll backs, system restores, you name it, it flat out refuses.

IIRC, this thread is dealing with the 0x80246002 result code occuring when installing KB2482017 for IE 8 on Windows XP systems, Sidekick2, despite the fact that this is the Windows 7 Miscellaneous
forum.
Is this the below result code what you're seeing, not 0x80246002 ?
0x80070026 ERROR_HANDLE_EOF Reached the end of the file
Not sure if you've tried this yet ... configure the system to Clean boot after downloading and saving a copy of
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 x64 Edition (KB2482017)
Disconnect the system from it's internet connection after you've restarted to the Clean boot state, run Windows6.1-KB2482017-x64.msu, then restart the system to the same Clean boot state.
Did that get the update installed ? Was the result code the same as before ?
If the results were the same, ensure that the native Windows 7 firewall is now On if a 3rd party firewall was being used as all 3rd party firewalls are Disabled in the Clean boot state, and then reconnect the system
to it's internet connection.
Download and save the version of the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR) for Windows 7 x64:
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2010]
Run CheckSUR in the Clean boot state. The system must be connected to the net when it's run so it can download .cab files.
When it's finished running it will leave 2 logs on the system -
Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log
Restart the system to the same Clean boot state and attempt to install KB2482017 once more.
Did that get the update installed ?
Whether it did or did not, undo the Clean boot configuration and restart to normal Windows mode now.
If the update installed, fine.
If it did not install, either post the contents of one of the CheckSUR logs and perhaps we can figure out why it will not install or,
call MS as Microsoft offers no-charge support for getting it installed.

No, each user should post his question into 1 topic. The error codes maybe the same, but the issue are not the same."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
