Kernel Data Inpage Error (hard drive ?) Lenovo Y310
Hello ! I just installed a fresh version of Windows 7 on my Lenovo 3000 (IdeaPad) Y310. My problem is that my computer freezes often. The light of hard drive access is turned on without blinking when freezing. Sometimes the computer does not stop freezing and gives me the Kernel Data Inpage Error BSOD. Knowing my computer did not have any of those issues after one year and a half with Windows Vista, Do you know what could be the cause of this problem and how to resolve this issue ? Thank you for your help !

Since Windows 7 is a newer operating system some of your hardware may no longer be compatible. If your hardware is compatible it may need updated drivers. If your computer came pre-installed with vista some of those drivers may be missing. You can learn more aboutyour computers compatabilityby running the upgrade advisor tool whichwill give you a detailed list of what issues there may be with your hardware, programs and driversto consider beforeupgrading to windows 7.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1b544e90-7659-4bd9-9e51-2497c146af15

Hello, Generally, the BSOD issue is caused by corrupt hardware drivers. You can check the issue in device clean boot mode. Follow the steps below: Device Clean Boot ================ 1. Click "Start", type "DEVMGMT.MSC" in the Search textbox and press Enter. Please click Allow if the User Account Control window is prompted. 2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3. Right click on your Sound Card, select "Properties" 4. Click "Driver" tab, click Disable (Disable the selected device). Click OK. 5. Please use the same method to disable other hardware: Display adapter, Modem, network adapter, CD-R drive. Note: The display resolution will be changed after disabling the display adapter. Then, restart your computer. Please check whether the issue persists. Click "Driver" tab, click Enable (Enable the selected device). Click OK. If the issue does not occur, we can re-enable the devices one by one to narrow down the root cause. The information about the BSOD will be recorded in Minidump files. If you would like to, you can send the Minidump files to me. I will analyze the files and get back to you. Refer to the steps below to collect the Minidump files: Minidump ======= 1. Click the Start Button, type "SYSDM.CPL" (without quotation marks) in the Search programs and files box and press Enter. 2. Click the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery". 3. Under "Write debugging information" section, make sure the "Small Memory Dump (64KB)" option is selected. 4. Check if "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" is in the "Small Dump Directory" open box. If the Blue Screen appears again, please refer to the following steps to collect memory dump files: 1. Click Start Button, type "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter. 2. Go to your Desktop, right-click on it and create a new folder named "Dump". 3. Copy all the memory dump files (looks like Mini092003-01.dmp) in Minidump to this folder. 4. Right-click on the Dump folder, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". You can reach me at ceciliazhou543@sina.com. Besides, you can also try to run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check the memory. To do this, click Start, type Memory Diagnostics in the Search programs and files box, press Enter. Choose one of the options to start the test. Cecilia Zhou

Hello Cecilia, I have a -stupid- question about your first tip of disabling then enabling again the drivers. My problem is not a consequence of a specific action. Then, should I - disable all drivers - reboot the computer, use it several hours until the problem occurs or not - and if not: enable one driver, use the computer several hours until the problem occurs or not... - and if not ... ? I checked the system to collect minidump files and I'm going to do the memory test right now :) Thank you :) --- Edit : No memory problem found :)

Two more troublshoots you can try, 1. In a command prompt typ "chkdsk /r /f" without the quotes. Answer yes to the question it asks about how the disks are currently in use. A disk integrity check will be performed the next time the computer starts. 2. You can also try a safe boot which is a quick way to see how the computer performs with core drivers only, basic services andno third party services or drivers. To do this press the windows logo key + r to open the run box, type "msconfig" and enter, select the boot tab and select safe boot minimal.

Hi Sebastien Lopez, Actually, the BSOD issues are mostly caused by a certain hardware driver. It is necessary that you check whether the BSOD would occur in device clean boot when the drivers are disabled. If the issue doesnt occur when a certain driver is disabled, we can conclude that the issue is caused by it. Does it make more sense now? If however, you feel it is rather complicated to perform a device clean boot, you can just boot into safe mode to observer the system. In safe mode, most hardware drivers are disabled. If the issue doesnt occur in safe mode, we can also conclude that the issue is related to a certain hardware driver. Then, we should narrow down the issue by re-enabling the drivers one by one. The Minidump files can help us to analyze which driver is causing the issue. It is better that you can send them to me. I will get back to you with the result. Or you can refer to the steps in the link below to debug the files by yourself. How to read the small memory dump files that Windows creates for debugging PS: you can research me at ceciliazhou543@sina.com Regards. Cecilia Zhou

Actually the most difficult part is that I need to have a system running smoothly for next week. My main problem is the freezes. I suspected BSOD were related to the same issue than freezes (as they happened at the same time), but in 5 days, I had 8-10 freezes but no BSOD to help me identify the real problem... and I can't spend all my time in front of this computer waiting for the bug to happen. :/ If I had freezes but no BSOD in 5 days running without having disabled drivers, how much time should I wait with disabled drivers ? I'm going to give a try and check if there are some freeze issues... At least let's try :) Another last stupid question, If I understand you well, I have to disable ALL drivers. But will the computer be always running if it does not have enabled drivers ? O_o

Hi, if the main issue is the freezes, I suggest you check the issue in clean boot mode. The freezing-up issue may be caused by a certain third party application. Here: Clean Boot mode If the system doesnt freeze up in clean boot mode, you can refer to the steps in the article to narrow down the root cause of the issue. As to your concern about the device clean boot, I would like to explain to you that you should just monitor the system for a while (about an hour). If the BSOD doesnt recur, you can try to re-enable the drivers one by one. However, since the BSOD havent recurred for a few days, I suggest you just focus on the freeze issue. Try a clean boot mode and check whether the system freezes up. Regards. Cecilia Zhou

Hello ! Thank you for your advices. So I tried the clean boot mode, and .... Yeaaah ! I just had this little freeze (around 15-25 seconds) in Clean Boot mode, what did I win ? ^^ So, according to you both (or others viewing this topic), what should I do now that I know the computer can freeze also in clean boot ? ;)

I suggest you run ShellExView to disable the third party add-ons. Follow the steps below: Run ShellExView ================= 1. Please download the ShellExView v1.10 to your Desktop. 2. Right-click the shexview.zip file, select "Extract All", and the Extraction Wizard will appear. 3. Select "Next", and under "Files will be extracted to this directory", type "C:\tool" (without the quotation marks). 4. Select "Next" and select "Finish". 5. Locate the directory C:\tool and double click shexview.exe. 6. Run the program and scan the computer. 7. Please press "Ctrl" on the keyboard and click all items which are marked in pink in the list. 8. Please choose all items and click "File" then "Save selected Items". (For example: File Name: ShellExView, Save as type: HTML File-Horizontal(*.htm;*.html)) 9. Please choose "File" then "Disable Selected Items". 10. Quit and restart the computer to check whether the computer freezes up now. It is better that you also scan the computer via your security application.Regards.Cecilia Zhou

Hi! I tried to install seven on another computer to test it.... Some difficulties during the installation (I had to use an usb key for the SATA drivers), I also had to de-plug and re-plug my creative audio card to have windows detect it. A few little freeze (a few seconds) after a few hours, sometimes after the loading screen my screen stays entirely black. Finally freezes when opening sessions (forced to reboot by reset button). However it seems to run without difficulties in safe mode. I can only conclude that Windows Seven and/or the third party drivers are not ready yet for each of my computers. I'm sorry to end this topic like this because as it did not led to some answers it was waisted time for you, but I can't carry on tracking bugs. I plan to re-install vista on my computers for the moment. Thank you for everything ! :)
