Lag with reading Network Drives after latest update
I am running Win 7 and connecting to a Win2003 Server. I run a bat file in the s I can connect fine to the server and the network drives map alright, but when I try to access the drives it takes forever to get a simple directory listing. The location bar is constantly running and trying to give a listing. This happened a while ago and it got fixed but then yesterday I did a Windows update and things got screwed up again. Now I cannot access the files on the server at all. What could be the problem?

So, I made a screencast of my problem here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b70eNfLcc8 The problem is only connecting to my Win2003 server on my domain. I can connect to XP machines fine with no lag. I have read the other posts and turned off all firewalls, ipv6, and power management. It was working fine until the other day and I did an update.

You may remove the installed antivirus and disable the firewall, then check the result. If the issue does not occur, the security programs can be the root cause. You may reinstall the antivirus and the program will re-configure itself in order to apply the current system environment. If the issue still occurs, please let us know if the issue occurs when you try to access the Windows Server 2003 from other Windows XP clients.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I have disabled all firewalls and antivirus on the machine as well. There are no problems accesing the files with XP either. If I use the IP address of the server, I can access the files much faster but then after a while the connection slows to a crawl as well.

I suspect that any incompatible update for the network adapter driver was installed. I suggest you roll back the network adapter driver and check the result. How to Roll Back a Device Driver If the issue persists, please follow the steps below to change default NTLM authentication level. Network security: LAN Manager authentication level The policy is located in: Computer configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Access this computer from the network Please change “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.Arthur Xie - MSFT

This problem came again this morning when Windows Update installed some updates and restarted my computer last night. There was severe lag when trying to access the network drives after the reboot. As I was typing in this reply I disconnected the drives and reconnected the drives with script. Now it's working fine with no lag. I suspect that it takes some time for the server to authenticate the computer or something like that. Thanks for the tip on the Drivers but I already had tried that as well as changing the authentication level.

Apparently you need to tell Windows that you want to use the machine as a file server and that it should allocate resources accordingly. Set the following registry key to ‘1′: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache and set the following registry key to ‘3′: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size After making these changes and restarting, I haven’t seen this issue arise again http://alan.lamielle.net/2009/09/03/windows-7-nonpaged-pool-srv-error-2017
