Laptop does not shutdown either in Win 7 Pro or in Ubuntu 10.10 ..... Need to shut it down by long-pressing power button ...
Hi, I bought a HP Pavilion dv6 3209 tx laptop only one month ago. It provided Win Home Basic. I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick along with it, from a pendrive .... I didn't get installed, & at that time, The screen suddenly became colourful with some bizarre symbols !! I shut it down with the power key. Since then, The home basic became very slow, cpu usage often reaches 100% or very high even while idle, does not shut-down properly. Then I formatted the hard disk,clean-installed Win 7 Pro (Got it from msdnaa) as well as ubuntu maverick. Now when I restart the system, it shuts down & restarts. But if shut down, then the desktop goes blank, but the fan keeps running, power indicator keeps glowing, system never shuts down till the power key is long-pressed. Also, The CPU usage becomes very high, sometimes it's normal. I'm confused. Is that any hardware issue ? Do I need to format it again, install xp sp3 & check it if the problems remain ? Please help !!

If the laptop is 1 month old and you have such issues, contact the HP support. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" Want to install RSAT on Windows 7 Sp1? Check my HowTo: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=150221

Thank you Andre ....... I'll definitely do that if the problem is not solved ....... But first I need to be sure whether it is a hardware issue or not. For example, when the lappy runs in Ubuntu, it's operating speed or CPU usage is normal ..... even when I'm writing this reply from Win 7, everything is normal, but sometimes it's not so smooth...... task manager shows CPU usage as 90 % or more !! I've decided to install xp & then check if the shutdown issue & slowness remains there too.

if the issues happen in all Operating systems, it is a hardware issue. You can make a xperf trace [1] to diagnostic the high CPU usage. Upload the etl file to your SkyDrive [2] and post a link here. I'll take a look at it, maybe I can see more details. Got limited access to internet for some days, so could not perform those steps ....... but found out a surprising fact: system is cool when it runs on direct power( plugged in) . But if, on battery, windows create trouble, ubuntu is fine .......... As my lappy has switchable gfx, may be that is the cause of trouble .......
