Love Windows 8.1, Hate the headache of trying to fix errors

Upgraded from Windows 8 Pro 64 bit to Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit with a free offer from Windows Store. Download went without a hitch until I tried to play Microsoft Mahjong and discovered it would not open. In fact, I found several apps that spin to a solid color and stopped. The one thing they all had in common was they were installed and on my Start Page. Went to event viewer and found all kinds of errors. They ranged far and wide as to what they said. App file could not load because there is already a download on the pc, or app cannot be located or simply app is broke. I have tried for over a month now to fix this and fear I am going to end up making my computer worse if I change something I shouldn't. I am usually pretty good figuring things out but computer programming is way out of my league. Something is off somewhere in the files. I made a new user file to see if these apps worked there and they did so I am wondering if I should just start a new account but I would like to transfer everything to another administrative account and not lose any files or downloads. I can't back up because the upgrade was done  on line and the only disc I have is for Windows 8 Pro. Can someone  help me? This is driving me nuts and trust me, it is a short trip. I spend all my time trying to fix this and am getting nowhere. Is there a way to uninstall the old apps so 8.1 can reinstall them?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
