Lync 2013 - crashing after Windows updates
Hi
After doing the last round of Windows updates, my Lync 2013 client doesn't want to start up. It just crashes at the beginning
Any suggestions on what to do? I've removed Lync, and installed it again. Also removed all the Lync updates that were installed from Windows Update and it still crashes on startup.

Please try to replace the faulting module by coping the file from other computer on which Lync clients work correctly.
Before the replacement, please back up the original module file.

Tried that, doesn't work. Also did a binary compare between the mfreadwrite.dll on the crashing machine and one where it works, and they are exactly the same (12.0.9200.16579)
July 17th, 2013 5:40pm
I am facing the same issue with a machine running the same build of mfreadwrite.dll (12.0.9200.16579), we also recently applied Windows Updates, I believe it's related to KB2843160.
Replacing the mfreadwrite.dll from another machine did not resolve the issue for me and Lync 2013 32-bit continues to crash on start-up.
I am going to test after removing the recent Lync security patch and see if this resolves the issue, though obviously is this is the cause removing the security update is not a solution.

Hi
I had the same problem earlier this week after an automated Windows Update session. I didn't tie the update to the crashing and ended up reinstalling all of Office 2013 Pro after trying to just remove Lync and then reinstalling. The re-installation of Office
cured the problem until this morning, when another Windows Update took place. This time Lync crashed immediately following the reboot after update so I joined the dots.
I went through and uninstalled KB2817465, the Security Update for Lync 2013, which somehow appear twice in my list of updates installed in the past week. After removing both instances in the list I fired up Lync again and it worked fine. I know you stated
you have removed the recent updates but just check for that particular KB number to make sure.
Cheers
Paul
Edit:
I just had another user complain of the same issue and I removed all 3 instances of the Lync 2013 Security Update in the Updates list, all having the same KB number but installed on different dates. This resolved the issue. This user also has an HP Laptop
PC. Anyone else using HP laptop/notebooks with this issue?

Removing the KB2817465 update hasn't worked for me. I also found that when I installed Logitech camera software I get the same crash with MFReadWrite.dll. As of right now I installed all of the latest Windows Updates for my system, excluding
KB2817465. After installing I rebooted and Lync worked fine, rebooted again and it is crashing again with above error and KB2817465 is not installed after going through the installed updates list. Any other suggestions?

Same problem here! Whats the fix? Any updates on this?
July 26th, 2013 6:49pm
In the same boat here. Could use some help please. I have two machines both identical except I ran Office updates on only one of them. That update installed the security update for Lync and it's in there three times.
I uninstalled and poof, all is well. I assume this update will reinstall however if we run Office updates.

It looks like Lync has conflict with dll file. In my case, event logs pointed BlueTooth dll file and soon I got it resolved after renaming problematic file. It may work on every other case of DLL clash.
Thanks

Mine worked by removing all the lync related updates and search for
vdpsrc.dll then rename it to vdpsrc.old.
let us know if it works

Hi! This crash happened to me on Win 7 (x64). I'm now running Win 8.1 (x64 Pro) and this issue started today after applying Windows updates.
The updates I applied were MS Visual C++ 2008 & 2010 SP1 (KB2538243, KB2565063).
My Lync client 2013 also started working after disconnecting the Logitech webcam (QuickCam E3500). It seems to crash immediately if I connect the webcam.
Have you found out anything?

My Problem is fixed if I unplug the Logitech webcam.
Be sure to unplug / disable all
of your Video devices for this workaround. Don't forget virtual devices installed by some applications.

I have same problem. Since some weeks Lync 2013 is crashing. When I unplug the web cam before I start Lync 2013 it is working. As soon I connect the web cam, Lync is crashing again.
Lync 2010 doesn't show the same problem. It is working well.
My problem is the file MFReadWrite.dll.

Same problem here - wondering if a different brand will work.

I experience the same issue with the MFReadWrite.dll Lync only crashes when I start a video call. It works for the first 2 seconds and then crashes. I also believe it's coming from Windows updates because Video calls worked for the last monthes without any
Problems. I already tried to uninstall the KB2817465 updates, but no luck.

Hi,
I had the same problem running on Windows 8 (x64) and Lync 2013 (x86). None of the above solution worked for me. However, after a support case with Microsoft we "solved" it by uninstalling the Citrix Receiver client application. This was a known bug and
Microsoft is currently investigating the problem.
Hope this will be of any help to anyone that have the same issue.

Hi,
That Receiver info is good to know. I can open a discussion about it in the Citrix forums? I'm running Receiver 4.0.1.4, do you have different one?

I had the same problem. Windows 8 (x64) and Lync 2013 (x86), with Logitech Camera and Citrix Receiver installed.
Lync crashed with the Logitech Camera was plugged in. When the camera was unplugged, Lync worked. With Lync running, and I then plugged in the camera, then Lync crashed. After reading this, I uninstalled Citrix Receiver and
now all is working OK. (Have not reinstalled Citrix Receiver at this point).

Hi, this solved my Problem with Windows 8 and Lync 2013 too. Thanks!
October 18th, 2013 8:55am
i had the same problem....and solved it
What was my solution:
in device manager 4 Other Devices with missing drivers were available.
3 times audio and 1 time VGA video
after installing those drivers Lync 2013 strated normally
October 30th, 2013 9:52am
what you should do is to unregister dll. The Lync client should be able to open again after run the following command with administrative right.
RegSvr32.exe /u C:\Program Files\Intel\Bluetooth\vdpsrc.dll

I can confirm that. After removing the Citrix Receiver (40.0.0.19) Lync is running without any issues.

Thanks, this led me down the path of uninstalling the Jan 14, 2014 Security Update KB2850057 - interestingly, there was also two previous versions of this sec update in my list. After a reboot, this update was removed and replaced with two versions of the
same update dated 27 Feb, 2014.
Lync Recording manager now starts without crashing.
This started because I was experiencing the Lync client crashing whenever I plugged in any usb audio device other than my Logitec Headset (eg: Roundtable or ip external phone). Hopefully this is now resolved.

Worked a treat - Thank you.

Hi everyone!
I have the same problem with some machines in our company.
Below I present step by step instruction how you can fix it:
1. Delete KB2817465
2. Install KB28881070 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2881070
3. Install KB2817465 again.
That all guys ;)

I had the same issue. Lync 2013 crashed every time I tried to start it. Nothing I tried from these forums fixed it. My ultimate solution was to uninstall it and go back to using Office Communicator instead. Lync is really a very unreliable product!
