Lync shows same contacts for every search

Hey Guys and Gals,

I love searching through forums for my answer and I can usually find it but not today. This is my first forum post and I really hope someone has an answer or can point me in the right direction. I have a user that is having trouble using the search feature in Lync. When she searches for any name, it could be 'Bob' or it could be 'Sally', the same contacts come up every time. Also, this issue started after an upgrade from 2010 to 2013.

Things I noticed about these contacts that come up every time:

  • They are all external contacts, not in our global address book
  • Each one has an unknown status
  • Their order is not effected when changing any option under the contact list options
  • Only after you pass close to 20 of these nonsense contacts, lync will display search results that are relevant

Things that I have tried:

  • Restarting the pc and the program -> no change
  • I removed the Cache for Lync in C:\Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\office\15\Lync  -> no change
  • Tried same acount on a known good PC -> issue doesn't persist

So at this point I know that it is not an issue with  the account or the server. Has anyone else seen anything like this? If so, how did you fix it. I would really appreciate any help.

Hi,

1. Try to delete Lync contact from OWA, restart Lync client and test the issue again.

2. Delete Lync user information in registry with the following path and then test again:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\sip@domain.dom

This could be the the contacts sitting on the Outlook personal contacts. Those will get shown when you do a search and always shows as Presence Unknown. See if that's the case and if so, you may need to remove those from Outlook and re do the SIP folder removal on the client and test

Are you referring to the contacts that keep coming up after every search.

2. Delete Lync user information in registry with the following path and then test again:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\sip@domain.dom

I tried this and it did not help.

The contacts that are showing up every time are personal contacts that she entered on her own. I have been testing this on a known good machine and when I log into her user account and sign into Outlook. The personal contacts are not showing up correctly but as name unavailable. I first thought it just needed some time to sync but all other contacts are showing up normal. 

So I think you may be right about deleting the troublesome contacts. Do you think that this might have been caused by an import of some kind?

Could be due to a dodgy import or corrupted records. You can export the contact from Outlook and delete the troublesome ones.
