Hi,I.m running Windows-7 RC1-7100 and just installed MIcrosoft Security Essentials,should I remove Defender, and how?Thanks in advance.Ed Yes, it can be disabled - in fact, it was disabled during installation on two of the five setups of MSE I have run. You do not, however, need to remove it. Just disabling it is sufficient. To do that, just click on the start orb, type services and hit enter.You thenscroll down the list of services to Windows Defender, right-click and choose properties. Once inside the dialog box, choose stop and then disable. It will then no longer start up on boot. In theory you could just set it to manual, but Windows Defender does have functions that overlap those of MSE. As a rule, I always disable Windows Defender when I have an intenret security package installed (regardless of which package) to avoid conflicts. Stephen

Thanks for your help Stephen! I just disabled it and MIcrosoft Security Essentials is running smooth, a lot better than the Norton Internet Security 2010 Beta that I had installed. I'm running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and there were some freezings and slowdowns with Norton Beta. Thanks again,Ed

hey Sw how is it going?i have both running and no signl of conflicts,however i wonder if theres any problem keep both running toguether? it looked to me that win defend is a complement for essentials,of course in my POV,so if i should disable it defenetely plz lemme know!thx in advance RR

Apparently there is a bug where it does not always get disabled when MSE is installed. If you are running XP, you can uninstall Defender, though that is not a requirement. Personally, I have also never seen a situation where it was a good idea to run two anti-spyware programs at the same time, since they tend to view each other as malicious software. Again, if you want to keep some other Defender function you could probably set it to manual instead of totally disabling, but I'll always choose to simply disable on my machines....Stephen

Hello Stephen,thx for warning me,indeed keep two anti spyware softwares together is not recommended,i thought MSE was anti-virus and anti spy,so windows defender for me was always like just a monitor tool for any changes of the system,like just a week antispy but 100% compatible which is a plus,im 100% compatible in terms of security i dont particularly use 3rd party softwares,and it works like a charm,i m running windows 7 and will never leave anymore lol kinda fell in love ,so it might sound lazy but i just read the safety center and it recommended me to turn off one of the antispy software!!!so guess wut imona do? hehethx for creating this topic guys i wasnt aware of that!ifmy windows is so fast now imagine without windefend!!Thx again guys :DRR
