Malicious Software Removal Tool Malfunctions
Hi,I am running Windows XP HOME OEM SP3. In running MRT.exe, the /N switch fails to function. Rather then performing a quick scan automatically without any prompts, it loads the program as if no switch was used. I am using it from command prompt. Something tells me special syntax must be used such that if mrt.exe is on the root of C drive, then the following would fail:mrt.exe /N Would fail because as I said, I believe special syntax is required.Enlighten me. 1 person got this answerI do too

MowGreen,Following your advice, (dos prompt, cd windows\system32, mrt /N) results in the GUI interface appearing***. ericore wants "a quick scan automatically without any prompts".So,USE MRT.EXE /N /QOpen the mrt.log at C:\windows\debug to review the result (give the scan time to complete)btw, I can run the above at the C:\ prompt, no need to change directories.(***- I am running WinXP Pro SP3 - and assuming this behavior is correct.)Agree?

Actually, the /n switch runs the MRT in detect mode and ericore wanted to run a Quick Scan from Command Prompt with no GUI.So the proper syntax would be mrt /q since it runs a Quick Scan by Default. To run an extended scan the synatx would be /q /f and to remove detected objects, /f:yAs for Windows XP ... I'm running Windows 7 and the Command Prompt opens to system32. I'll check on an XP system later.MowGreen Windows Expert IT Pro - Consumer Security

Mowgreen,Thanks for the clarification. So:mrt /N /Q results in a quick scan (by default) with no GUI (/Q is Quiet mode) and no removal of detected objects (/N is detect only)mrt /Q /F results in a full scan (/F is the force full scan switch) with no GUI (/Q is Quiet mode) and no removal of detected objects (by default)mrt /Q /F:Y results in a full scan (/F is the force full scan switch) with no GUI (/Q is Quiet mode) and removal of detected objects (/F:Y turns on removal)And, is this correct??:mrt /Q results in a quick scan (by default) with no GUI (/Q is Quiet mode) and and removal of detected objects (by default) ???Hope you are still around, don't check my e-mail too often!!

All of the commands lines for running the MRT are in this KB article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830Support for command-line switchesThe Malicious Software Removal Tool supports four command-line switches:SwitchPurpose/Q or /quietUses quiet mode. This option suppresses the user interface of the tool./?Displays a dialog box that lists the command-line switches./NRuns in detect-only mode. In this mode, malicious software will be reported to the user, but it will not be removed./FForces an extended scan of the computer./F:YForces an extended scan of the computer and automatically cleans any infections that are found.MowGreenWindows Expert IT Pro - Consumer Security*-343-* FDNYNEVER FORGOTTEN
