Malware/bot/worm reg entry deleted, but msconfig still thinks it's there
So I'm running Home Premium 32 on my little Acer laptop, and I get a bug. No biggie, my antivirus has been great in the past. Whoops! something slipped passed it... So I take matters into my own hands after more than a week of waiting for an update that will take care of it. I run msconfig snoop around the startup items (and delete a bunch of mail...though I don't think that helped). One of the entries is odd, it's in Chinese, and usually it will be translated. I haven't installed any off-beat software, so I think that's it. I take it off the startup list, and I'm booting faster and running faster, so I think...this is it. I try to send the information to my antivirus company but for some reason I can't copy the name of the registry key...weird. So I back up my registry, and delete the horrid little bug...That's it! The computer is flying once again! so I return my startup to normal and go on my merry way. After I restart, I look at msconfig again and it's there. So I go find the registry entry...but it's gone? I don't think the entry is still there, it's just that somehow the config directory didn't get updated somehow...well maybe, anyone have any thoughts on my little predicament? Has anyone else seen this or anything like it? Is it still there and just hidden from me? Is there another bot or something on the computer maybe?Jah Love

My initial suspicion was wrong, it wasn't just an issue of the configuration utility not being updated. It's back again....
