McAfee Veing Misreported as Installed
Hello,I have a Dell XPS 420 that came with mcafee antivirus that I uninstalled using the control panel applet. However, the windows security center still reports it as being installed as anti-virus and anti-spyware. Besides the general annoyance of this being incorrect, I think this bug is downright dangerous. It's misinforming users that they are protected when in fact they're not. Also, I am concerned that some other software might use this to incorrectly detect the presence of anti-virus software on my system (not sure if this is the case) when in fact I have none. Can anyone tell me how the windows security center detects the presence of security software so I can remove whatever it's checking?Any help appreciated, thank you.Alex P,

It uses WMI to generate the information. Fixing the WMI Repository resolves the problem. Security Center not reporting Anti-virus or firewall status correctly.

Thanks for the great link, I actually had my hopes up that this would fix it. Unfortunately my WMI repository is not corrupt. Not sure where to go from now, is there a tool that will allow me to browse the repository and delete the McAfee entry manually?

Hi Alex, before moving on, I would like to you know that if we initialize the related uninstallation action via Control Panel Add/Remove Program applet, it actually launches the specific applications uninstallation program, which is provided by the application manufacturer. This security center issue mostly can be caused by the Mcafee uninstallation program didnt remove their states from Windows WMI cleanly. For more information about Windows Security Center: Frequently asked questions about Windows Security Center http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883792 Based on the situation, we can try to resolve this issue by taking the following suggestions. 1. Restore the WMI Repository. 2. Contact McAfee to see if they have any remove tool to completely clean their data from the system (especially for the data in WMI). Regarding the #1, I have listed the steps: 1. Click "Start", type: services.msc in the search box and press Enter. 2. Right click on Windows Management Instrumention, choose Stop. Do not close this Service window. 3. Locate Repository folder in C:\windows\system32\wbem, rename Repository to Repositoryold. Repository 4. Restart the Windows Management Instrumention service. 5. Restart the computer to test this issue. Regarding the #2, I have listed the Mcafee Support link for you: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/ Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice.
