Microsoft IME Japanese on screen keyboard constantly switches to hiragana even mid-typing

I am using three languages on my computer: English, Russian and Japanese (rarely). In Win7, it was easy because I was using two keyboard layouts: Japanese and Russian. By default, Japanese acted just like an english keyboard, and i could easilly switch to Japanese when I needed by pressing Alt+`. And I didn't have to switch layouts twice to go from english to russian (and remember which way is one switch, and which way it's two).

In Windows 8, using on screen keyboard (had limited experience with normal keyboard, so mostly talking about on screen) is a nightmare for me.

- First, it starts in japanese, not in english. I guess it's good for people who mostly type in japanese, but isn't there a way to set your default?

- What's worse, it constantly switches to japanese! So, I change to romaji, start typing, say "microsoft ime windows" and as I start typing "windows" it will switch to hiragana and start showing popups with different kanji and hiragana that fit what I've typed! This is ridiculous and very annoying.

Is there a way to fix this? Maybe there are 3rd-party replacements for on-screen keyboard that work better than default one? Maybe there's a way to default to romaji?
